Review summary

They were a little more expensive than Carnival and I did not think it was any better. It seemed to be a lot stuffer than Carnival and had no reason to be because it wasn't any better. They cut corners in entertainment and dining that stood out to me. The ship was quite a bit nicer than what we have been used to on Carnival, but we have never gotten a balcony so not sure how nice the balcony rooms are on Carnival and have not been on any of Carnivals big ships either so can't really compare.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
All of the juices they put out are watered down to make their supplies stretch. My time dining actually has to be reserved.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5

Entertainment

3 out of 5
They play the same movies all week long, not much variety.

Children's Programs

Service and Staff

Ship Quality

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Liked the amount of room we had, didn't get to spend too much time on the balcony until the evenings because it was so steamy hot from morning until late afternoon.

Ship tip

The pizza on the Promenade was pretty good as we're some of the sandwiches from the coffee shop. The food in the Windjammer was nearly as good as what was in the dining room and if you prefer to dress more casually then that is the place to be....not as stuffy. There was always a good selection.

Ports of call

Port Canaveral, Florida

3 out of 5

Cococay (Cruise Line's Private Island)

3 out of 5
The beaches were very clean and lots of fish swimming around you.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

3 out of 5
Shopping in main street is the place to be.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

3 out of 5
The tour that goes to Orient Beach, shopping, and sightseeing was 4 1/2 hours long, great value and tour guide was excellent and informative.

I have always enjoyed RCI. As far as the stuffier people, who cares. I just show them how to have fun😂😂

We have cruised on Carnival, RCCL, NCL, Princess (before the Carnival Corporation acquisition), and a couple of small Mediterranean/Black Sea passenger accommodations.  The cruise experience is a bit different between RCCL and Carnival, but we would agree that they are not dramatically different on whole.  I would suggest that the following account for bigger differences in the cruise experience even on the SAME cruise line:

1  Cruising during the summer or spring break versus cruising during the off-peak periods.  During the peak periods all ships are more fully loaded, lines are longer, and there are more children on any cruise line.

2  Cruising on different size and age ships.  There are some highly rated older ships of Carnival and RCCL that match their newer ships for service and cleanliness; pick these or lower your expectations for a bargain cruise on an older or smaller ship.

3  Cruising on a ship immediately before a refresh versus after the refresh.

4  Cruising on different itineraries and from different ports. The same ship leaving from the East Coast, versus from Florida or San Juan, or the Eastern Caribbean, versus Western Caribbean, versus Mediterranean will yield a different experience.

5  Unfortunately, all or most cruise lines are reducing some of the perks as the passenger volume and costs increase.  So comparing a cruise 2 weeks ago to a cruise on a similar ship and itinerary that you took 3 years ago will probably not provide an apples to apples comparison.

In summary, we enjoy both and look for the good deals.  We believe any week on a highly rated cruise ship is a blessing to enjoy, even if not perfect, and that the differences are a positive that help keep cruising fresh and inviting.  We do have a few RCCL cruises lined up, but that is mainly because right now RCCL has more ships we haven't cruised on compared to Carnival's top 3 ship classes by size. We may go back on an NCL cruise just because we haven't cruised with them in a while and we will probably pick a Celebrity ship soon.  We expect and understand that the NCL and Celebrity experiences will be different than either RCCL or Carnival and that will be just fine with us:-)

I've been on RC, Princess and Carnival. To me, Carnival is great for younger cruisers. I wasn't impressed at all by the food or the noise from all the kids running up and down the cabin corridors until the wee hours of each morning. I can't say for the other lines, but with RC, after I book my cruise, I keep going to their website and reviewing emails looking for better offers. They always honor the lower price and recalculate what I owe. I purchased in April and have done that 3 times since then.

balcony on RC, inside on Carnival at the $100 per person higher price, if that did not make sense...no coffee yet

we have been on both, and are going on RC Oasis of the Seas in a few weeks and then back on Carnival in March. this trip on a 7 night on RC was $100 per person higher than our upcoming Carnival, and we ended up with more on board credit and two robes to take home, and that higher rate was for a balcony room as there were only suites or inside left on the Carnival, so stuck with an inside. Our last Carnival I lost 7 pounds on the trip, the food offerings during the day were blah, the comedy shows were the same each of the shows each night and that was about the extent of the entertainment. Our upcoming one on RC, we have comedy, ice show, water theater show, headliner show, Cats, an aerial show, prohibition party and sadly with a group of 25 we have a comedy show on the upcoming Carnival. We love to staff on both and love the over night stop in PV on the Carnival one, but entertainment and food just don't measure up. I will admit, we've only done the larger RC ships.

I have been on both Carnival and Royal with 15 cruises to date. Royal by far is our favorite. The last 6 cruises are Royal and all our future cruising will be Royal😀

No way Carnival is better.

We have been on RCI 4 times and Carnival 9 times. Carnival has better cabins, food and more entertainment. Some of RCI touches that are nice are on the Promenade. The people are stuffier on RCI and some of the Carnival are sort of Walmart class. I like them both to me it's all on price and ports.

In general, Carnival has some of the roomiest staterooms.  I especially like and book the Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms.  They have an extra half bathroom that makes getting ready in the mornings, at dinnertime and bedtime so much easier.  If you are looking for professional entertainment nightly, consider MSC.

my wife and I have cruised on Carnival and Royal Caribbean and we much prefer Royal Caribbean. The food is better and the shows are better. Carnival is just ok. Nothing special.

I have cruised Royal and NCL but never Carnival. Always wondered if I would get the "royal" treatment outside of Royal Caribbean. I have looked into Carnival for 2017 (we are already booked on Royal for 2016). We shall see... Your review makes me feel better.

Glad to see this comment I have only sailed on Carnival ships and always wondered about RCCL Nice to know that since I love the Carnival ships I won't waste the extra money on a RCCL cruise

Good review!! I have also sailed on both Carnival (5 times) and Royal Caribbean (2 times) and the only thing I did notice different was it seemed the balcony cabins on the RCCL ships were a bit smaller as were the balconies themselves. If you never sailed on Carnival with a balcony, I think you'll be happy! Our last Carnival ship was the Dream and we loved it from embarkation to debarkation. I agree, in my opinion both RCCL & Carnival are close to the same except for RCCL being a bit more expensive for the same iteneary.
