Review summary

This was the longest cruise we've taken at 17 days. My wife was apprehensive, but now admits it was fine for her. We enjoyed an abundance of good weather with only 2 days of 20+ft. seas. The other 15 days were in moderate to calm seas. We have booked Alaska for the summer and Norway for next. We were awarded 4 Star Mariner pins the last day of this cruise.

Embarkation

We boarded early and efficiently.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Two nights of Rudi's Sel de Mer topped our favorite dinners in the Pinnacle. Tamarind is also outstanding. Canaletto was always tasty too. Holland America's consistent top quality food is one of the main attractions. We were not impressed, however with the Lido for dinner. We left our dinners on the table and ordered a delicious pizza on the back deck! And the Dive-In for hamburgers and hot dogs is incredibly good. All ship beverage services and staffing was top of the line. Nearly every night we enjoyed the specialty restaurants.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We enjoy gambling and especially this trip because the Casino was smoke-free. The table games were great fun. The Casino dealers and staff made it enjoyable. The slot play also seemed to keep fellow passengers returning day after day. Seemed to be paying a little better than our last trip to Europe on the Koningsdam. We did quite a bit of walking too.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
We sat in on a Billboard show or two during our 17 days. We also enjoyed B.B. King's musicians couple of times. Only time I went to the showroom was to listen to the Captain speak. My career was in the entertainment business, so sitting for show is much like a mailman taking a walk after work.

Children's Programs

We're grandparents without little ones.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
We always tip special staff beyond the ship's normal charges. We enjoyed outstanding service from all Eurodam personnel which made us happy.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The ship looked great. Nothing needed attention. Common areas (including bathrooms) were clean and spotless. Always looked ship-shape!

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Our suite had a wrap-around deck at the rear corner. The windows below the railing were not cleaned, even though it was announced that cleaning was underway. The carpet in the cabin was not worn, but needed a good shampoo. Everything else was as advertised.

Ship tip

Three card poker is good fun. Salad bars are great. Take the ship's tour if it is offered. Be sure to attend the Captain's Q & A...well worth the hour.

Enjoyed the welcome center folks after taking the tender to the port. Met a hometown and college friend for lunch.

Cruise Kilauea Volcano Did not visit port

We passed this point well after dark, and the Volcano was not visibly active.

Spent some time in Hilo on past trips, so enjoyed another quiet day onboard.

I do not travel to Mexico...period. Disease and safety. End of story.
