Review summary

So many people have written about the size of the cabins and bathroom and how cold it is in the cabins, and I always commented saying " come on you're not moving in you'er just staying for the week", how right they were! I have 51 cruises under the belt, with that said, I had to ask the cabin steward to separate the beds just so we could get in the room and have room to move and store our suitcases under the bed with ease. The smallest, coldest cabin at sea for sure, and lets not get talking about the bathroom size, it was like an RV and the tiniest shower as well. If you are size challenged please keep this in mind (I had an inside cabin). The ship is definitely for people who want to sit around and relax. If you need constant simulation then you need to get on one of the larger more active ship on the RCI fleet. The Bands were great, the food and service in the main dinning room were great. The buffet food during the sea days was tasteless and lukewarm at best. It is a very good looking ship on inside, but not up to Royal standards on the outside as it resembled a rusted Carnival ship on the outside. There were a lot of smoking areas which ruined beautiful outdoor areas for the 90% non smokers. I had fun meeting really nice passengers on board as well as interacting with really friendly staff members throughout the ship. Again bands were great, shows and comedians were great, people seems happy overall. A zero for outside look of the ship, and a zero for daytime buffet food. Remember you may experience a much different cruise so cruise with an open mind always no matter what you read.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The Main dinning room food and service was a very good to excellent. Nanang and Erwin treated my wife and I like family. Bread the food and always warm and tasty.

Windjammer Café

1 out of 5

No taste to the food served for lunch on sea days. I don't eat fast food, but I would have gone to McDonalds if I could, and only the wind jammer was open for lunch so big negative on sea day dinning during the day.

Main Dining Room

5 out of 5

A big Negative is RCI and the Empress staff and not accustom to what my time dinning means, they still ask you to make a reservation to eat dinner. Other than that the food and service was good to excellent. Nanang and Erwin were top notch.

Boleros

5 out of 5

Excellent place to stop and listen to the excellent Latin Band or visit the super nice bar staff for a drink. Everyone that came in there were nice and friendly.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
The pool area is way too small I did not visit it at all, I'm from Florida so I don't cruise for the pool use, I leave it to the people who need it most.

Fitness Center

2 out of 5

The tiniest gym at sea, I think it was an after thought. Whom ever put that gym there is still laughing.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Bands were very good to excellent and the shows and movies in the main Theater were very good.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
All staff I interacted with were Excellent!

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The ship layout is very nice, comfortable and open spaces everywhere, you would think you were on a larger ship. I was not a fan of visible rust on the deck areas I walked. Too many smoking locations is another negative for me also. 1 smoker ruined it for 25 non smokers.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
This was the smallest, coldest cabin I have ever in 51 cruises had the privilege to stay in. If you are size challenged please keep this in mind. I had to ask the cabin steward to move the beds apart so we could have room to move and store out suitcases.

Ship tip

Bring a sweater as the cabin is the coldest I have ever been in, many people throughout the ship left the doors open when in the cabin, I have never seen that before this cruise.

Ports of call

Key West, Florida

4 out of 5
Also a fun day at key West, no matter what you chose to do.

Belize City, Belize Did not visit port

We did the snorkel trip, which was just ok for the money.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

5 out of 5
Always a fun day to visit this port.

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
Love Cozumel always a fun day to visit the beach or shop.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Empress staff member Ms. Bonita did a good job at keeping people calm and in line waiting to disembark.

I’ll be on the Empress in June. I’m happy to hear the dining room food is good. The rooms may not be as cold in the summer. We’ve booked one with a porthole. Small is fine. We’re spending 4 full days in Bermuda. I don’t care if lunch is bland and there’s a spot of rust on the hull.

Surprise about the size of your cabin

Cold? Sounds like my kind of cabin. Never had that issue on a cruise. Usually the opposite problem. You can always get more blankets. That being said, i imagine Royal will transfer this ship back to the Pulmantur fleet within the next 2 years.

My first cruise & ship! It’s the smallest of their fleet but I had a great time. Definitely one of those just to lounge around kind of ships.

Turn up the cabin temperature. No reason to freeze.
