Review summary

A Vegan's Cruise Experience: A Tale of Two Halves! As a dedicated vegan, I approached my recent Princess Cruise with a mix of excitement and trepidation. While the prospect of a week-long vacation was thrilling, the question of dietary accommodations loomed large. Initially, the experience was a bit of a rollercoaster. Many staff members seemed unfamiliar with vegan dietary needs, leading to confusion and disappointment. Simple requests for vegan alternatives were often met with blank stares or dismissive responses. It was clear that veganism was not a priority for the cruise line. However, a few individuals truly shined, transforming my cruise experience. I want to give a special shoutout to Executive Sous Chef Kuldeep, Sous Chef Randy, and especially Demi Chef DPartie Kareem, and even more importantly First Commis ChefJavier (Jamaican), whose passion and commitment to creating delicious vegan meals were truly inspiring. Kariem and Javier’s culinary skills and willingness to go the extra mile made every meal a delightful experience. I truly appreciate these four amazing chefs for their kindness and dedication to my medical dietary needs. I truly am grateful! For the first time ever in nine years, I was feeling embarrassed and shame for being vegan. It didn’t matter where I was on the ship or what vegan treat or meal or drink I was met with a No and felt like a burden. So again, these four gentlemen cheered me up and were simply wonderful! Thank you! I also want to acknowledge the incredible work of the cruise director, Kristoff, and his team. Their infectious energy, engaging activities, and hilarious trivia nights made the cruise even more enjoyable. While the available vegan options for food, cocktails, and the bakery highlights were few and far between, the ship itself offered a pleasant atmosphere and a variety of activities. The couples massage and especially the blowout with scalp massage were both a standout, that was truly luxurious, relaxing, and rejuvenating. Huge and generous thank you to Alvin our cabin keeper. Alvin, you were wonderful! Thank you Princess Cruise offered some enjoyable aspects, but it fell very short in terms of catering to the needs of vegans; unless Chef Kuldeep, Randy, Kariem, and especially Javier (from Jamaica) are aboard. Honestly, with a little more effort and training, the cruise line could significantly improve the experience for plant-based travelers. By prioritizing vegan options, providing comprehensive staff training, and partnering with reputable vegan food and alcohol suppliers, Princess Cruises could be a leader in vegan-friendly cruising! Food for thought: Vegetarian can eat vegan, Vegan can’t eat vegetarian. Vegan Options take care of vegetarians and vegans!

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
SLOW Service, expect dining to take two hours or longer. Don’t be surprised by quick dismissals from staff. You must be assertive and be prepared to problem solve when you get a snappy NO to a question and or a request for something. HOWEVER- I can’t thank the following Chefs enough for coming to my rescue: Chef Kuldeep, Randy, Kariem, and especially Javier (from Jamaica). The start of day three is when I met my heroes in the buffet! They were amazing and so helpful! Please read my summary below to learn more!

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We enjoyed our daily walks around the track. We also thought the weight room and included classes were nice (we didn’t take any classes, but impressed with the options.)

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Always, so many options and so much fun. My family and I love the trivia games!

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Alvin, our cabin attendant was wonderful! The spa and staff were all lovely! Four Chefs were amazing! Other than direct interaction it seemed like more than a few staff members were not happy to be on board.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Clean and comfortable

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Comfortable, plenty of hangers, clean.

Ship tip

VEGAN Beware! The absolute worst experience! Vegetarian options everywhere! None to limited options for vegan no matter where you go! Desserts or Breakfast pastries- Don’t hold your breath! Meals so depressing! Princess Cruise offered some enjoyable aspects, but it fell very short in terms of catering to the needs of vegans; unless Chef Kuldeep, Randy, Kariem, and especially Javier (from Jamaica) are aboard.

Ports of call

San Pedro (Los Angeles), California

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

The port was sketchy! We walked around 15 minutes before heading right back to the safety of the ship.

Mazatlan, Mexico

Pretty sure we heard a massacre happening (seriously, there was a gunshot and a minute or two later a whole round of gunfire) we were safe as well as the passengers. It was off in a distance, that heard very clearly from the ship.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

5 out of 5
Amazing!! My husband and I walked 45 minutes (we’re speed walkers) to one of the near by towns. We walked and shopped and then took a taxi back. The taxi driver spoke perfect English and was so friendly as well was everyone in town. We felt incredibly safe and absolutely loved it!!

There’s an old joke: How do you know someone is a vegan? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.

Answer me one question, how come almost every restaurant, cafe, diner cater for vegans, BUT no vegan eateries cater for carnivores, would just like to know.

Was this a cruise review or a dig at cruise lines for not bowing to a vegan?

Thank you for your review.

I would assume it is pretty hard to meet everyone’s food expectations when there are thousands of people on a ship, not to mention they choose to limit their food options. To each their own to do so. I have been to these ports. Cabo was much safer than Puerto Vallarta. I would not get off a ship there again!
