Review summary

My first cruise experience with Princess has made me a lover of the cruise experience for life. I'm already looking to book another cruise next summer to Alaska and I will ONLY cruise on Princess. Besides the elevators always being busy mid-ship, no complaints overall. Top rated service and staff, and the Discovery was a beautiful ship. I will return without question!

Embarkation

5 out of 5
This was my first time cruising but the experience was easier than I expected.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The buffet was fine, I appreciated the speed with which staff cleaned and bussed tables. I really enjoyed dining in the Skagway and Ketchikan dining rooms, and room service was spot on!

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Movie under the stars was very nice but I heard complaints about older movies being shown rather than new movies. I enjoyed the bingo and comedian as well as the casino! I purchased jewelry and perfume and really enjoyed the charm bracelet and gathering my charms throughout the week.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Excellent - Fortuna Luck was fun, our cruise captain DuVaul was so very nice, the comedian and presenters were funny and entertaining!

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Just all around the best service anywhere. From Donauld my room steward, to waiters and store staff, I had not a single complaint about Princess staff.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
It took me a day or two to figure out which floors didn't go all the way across the ship, I.E. which floor I needed to be on to get from aft to front of the ship, but once I got it, it was easy. Our cruise wasn't full or so I was told, but there were still plenty of packed elevators and it just seemed VERY BUSY midship. The ship was kept clean and dusted, and I told staff repeatedly I appreciated them sanitizing, etc.

Cabin / Stateroom

I was actually upgraded to D510 and it was amazing. My view was NOT obstructed and it was the most spectacular relaxing time just to sit on deck and enjoy the view. My room steward Donauld was amazing and took such great care when cleaning my room, changing linens, etc. I was absolutely spoiled and will cruise Princess again simply because of the service.. and, Discovery is an absolutely beautiful ship!

Ship tip

Use the app - this was my first time cruising and when the app was having problems I went straight to the staff who handles it and she fixed it immediately.. and the app can tell you how to get somewhere for an event or activity, you can order room service, make dinner reservations, look at port information, and simply order a drink to where you are because you're so relaxed you don't want to vacate your 'spot'!! The app made it so easy to do and know everything I needed to while I was onboard!! I spoke to folks who were on Holland and they all commented that their app is NOT so cool, so go with Princess!!

Ports of call

San Pedro (Los Angeles), California

2 out of 5
This was simply my embark/disembark location. LA is gross period, but convenient to get on ship!

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

3 out of 5
Cabo is a dirty place but my glass bottom boat tour was amazing! The staff running the tenders were very nice and made taking a tender to shore quite simple.

Mazatlan, Mexico

5 out of 5
Excellent excursions, dancing horses/tequila factory/lunch, etc. and our tour guide was fantastic!!

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

5 out of 5
The cleanest city I've been in, in a long time!! Cleaner than many in the US! I highly recommend Puerto Vallarta as a major Mexico stop!

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Easy, simple, found my luggage just fine, and staff were amazing!
