To add to JT1962, there are usually local volunteers at each port with guide maps and suggestions. Buses are often available to take you to the main part of town. These usually cost around $10.00 to $15.00 per person and can be purchased on board or charged to your onboard account at the dock. Trains are fast, reliable and almost always on time in Japan. Train station announcements are usually in both Japanese and English. Often you can be your own tour guide and shop and sightsee at your own pace. Just be sure to carry some Japanese yen since many smaller restaurants and shops only except cash. Japan is very safe, but be aware of your surroundings and be conscious of when you need to be back. Make sure you know where to meet the bus and when the last bus leaves for the dock. If you used a train, know the trains schedule. Finally, know when all back aboard time is! Getting back a couple hours early is always a good idea.

You are not required to book excursions through the ship. There are plenty of independent excursions available with a little research online that are usually cheaper, less crowded and last longer than the ship excursions.
