Review summary

Versus prior trips on Costa the reduction in services and on board options was very apparent. Sad to see them reduce their appeal. The "brindiamo" package left a lot to be desired -- wine selections were few and beer selection (draft only limited to Heineken or Carlsberg) was poor -- no craft beers included (ie, IPAs, Maibocks, Porters, etc). But the people made the difference. The professionalism, friendliness, spontaneity, smiles, assistance offered were absolutely exceptional. I would easily return if only for the people.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
It was good -- as a back to back trip, time spent off the ship waiting to re-board was acceptable

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
The food was okay but less than I expected from an Italian cruise ship; also the buffet closed too early on many occasions.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
Sun bed areas was great. However, several times people did not respect the the fact that it was a requirement to pay for the area. The pool attendants, poor guys, had to put with people who pretended not to understand. Several guests were boorish and did not wish to leave or pay. The pool attendants handled matters with professionalism and courtesy, but I felt for them in a thankless job. The should have had assistance from security, I did not use the pools as they were always full.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Compared to prior cruises on Costa, the musicians were fewer and the shows were less than expected.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Can't say enough about these people -- they were super, especially our table waiter, a couple of bar staff, and the Hospitality/Service Desk. The made the cruise special.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Layout was good as was design. There were times that restromm cleanliness left something to be desired. Some guests who had no concept of higiene "fouled" the restrooms. More restroom attendants would have helped. However, when brought to the attention of the staff, action was taken immediately.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Cabin and balcony met expectations or exceeded them. Comfort was good, except for the pillows -- too hard and uncomfortable. Cleanliness was excellent.

Ship tip

If you've never sailed before, it will be special. If you sailed before, and if on Costa, you may well be disappointed vs prior sailings. The finance people had a hand in cutting things appreciated by cruise guests.

Ports of call

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida

3 out of 5
I do not like Port Everglades, though the Costa terminal was certainly better than the other terminals. For more efficient and less crowded.

Freeport, Grand Bahama Island

1 out of 5
Hope to never go back to Freeport.

Grand Turk Island

5 out of 5
Lovely beach -- you literally walk off the boat onto a really beautiful beach with crystal blue waters. One of the best ports of call.

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

5 out of 5
Good, modern safe and secure.

Miami, Florida

1 out of 5
Had to get off the boat for US Customs and Passport Control, otherwise I didn't visit the port. I hope Costa will remove Miami from its stops. Unless you're on an excursion, it is a real pain in the butt.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
The best and quickest disembarkation of any port I have been to -- Costa deserves a "pat of the back."
