Review summary

Embarkation was fantastic, didn't have to wait hardly at all.

Buffet was very crowded, thankfully a Princess employee told us to find a seat before getting our food.  We had second seating in the Provence dining room and the service was good.  Portions are getting smaller and smaller though and we are a little shy about asking for a second entree.  We had a reservation on my husbands birthday for the Bayou Cafe and it was the best meal we had.  We both had Filet Mignon with a lobster tail and we were both shocked at the quality and size of both.  Their dessert was out of sight if you love peanut butter and chocolate.  We purchased a bottled water package before cruising and a coffee card.  We then enjoyed bottled water and lattes the entire time, very nice!

I like to play slots at the casino when we cruise and this being my 14th cruise I have seen some casinos.  This was, without a doubt, the smallest, worst casino for slots I have seen.  Old machines, half the amount I expected and one section of the casino was so hot that no one would sit long...therefore cutting the amount of machines even further.  I figured I'd save myself some money and normally would have been there everynight, but only went there 3 nights.

The cruise director was so so.  You would see him in the Atrium and doing his morning show (which he taped the night before), but he hardly ever made any announcements, didn't say anything to us via announcement on our disembarkation.  All in all very lackluster.

As far as the itinerary is concerned, the transit through the canal was the Best!  Worth the whole trip.  Started our day very early (about 6AM) on Deck 11 (the same deck our cabin was on) as we had access to the front of the ship from there.  We stayed there the whole time through the canal to the lake.  The other ports of call were fine, albeit a little short on time in Aruba, and Ocho Rios was lousy, but we had never been to Cartagena and Costa Rica and now we can say we have, however, the purpose of our trip was to see the transit and it was definitely enjoyable.

The buffet was good, dining room was good, Bayou Cafe was excellent and Room Service was excellent

Entertainment

Theater too small, and uninspiring, the ugliest theater we have seen and everything was done in the theater. If you like broadway productions and nothing else, you might enjoy, but be sure to get there early for a seat! In other theaters on other ships, you had room for drinks, a table, etc....not here! Also, the inroom TV is lousy. There is room for improvement there as well. Since the theater is so small and all the entertainment venues are small as well, maybe broadcasting those shows on the TV the next day would be an improvement as well. Some of the channels listed on the guide had nothing on them.

Service and Staff

Our cabin steward "Glad" was the best!

Very nice mini-suite. The most wonderful bed and linens! We got a bottled water package which was wonderful because they emptied out the frig (another nice thing to have) and we had our own bottled water for 10 days. And we had access to the front of the ship on Deck 11 so we could see the whole transit through the canal. You can do this if you are on decks 10 or 11. Would have been a well kept secret but the guide on the ship talking about the canal transit let "everyone" know that you could do this. So we had quite a few people who thought it was a good idea too. So get there early!

Ship tip

If you like to see the shows, prepare to get a seat about an hour early. Their theater is small and ugly, maybe seats 700 plus or minus! So if there are 2000 passengers aboard and 2 shows, not everyone will be able to see the show. And if you like slot machines, you will be sorely disappointed!

Aggressive vendors, but a lovely city. The tour we took was shown as "easy" and it really required quite a bit of walking. For those of us with mobility issues, it was a little hard with all the walking. But the old city was beautiful and the tour guide was great! Jose Villa Jr.

Panama Canal (Cruise Into Canal)

Worth the whole trip, very interesting. Had 2 documentaries on the inroom TV that were very informative also.

Nothing to do or see here

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

The countryside is absolutely beautiful, but driving through the city shows a lot of broken down homes and very trashy.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Hopefully you get the better dock than we had because we got the "James Bond" dock. We had to navigate through railroad ties, gantry cranes, uneven sidewalks, just like we were "cargo", then before we got to the gate to walk 1/2 mile to the shops, we were attacked by aggressive taxi drivers. We turned around and went back to the ship.
