Review summary

This is a bucket list adventure. Say yes to everything and enjoy every moment because it goes by fast. While the indescribable majesty of Alaska stands very much on its own, Celebrity Edge managed to make it even better. Service, food, elegance, and ease of everything made this Celebrity adventure a once-in-a-lifetime event...that we hope to repeat!

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Once we were dropped off. the embarkation was fast and easy. The Celebrity luggage porter and staff inside the terminal were fabulous. However, traffic getting to the drop off area was horrible and the people working on the pier directing traffic and pedestrians were some of the rudest, most unprofessional I have ever encountered. I was blown away by how they were speaking to people. I can't believe Celebrity would stand for that considering how amazing the service everywhere else was.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We have been on nearly 20 cruises with Royal and Carnival. The food on Celebrity Edge was, without a doubt, the best we have ever had. Fine Cut Steakhouse was one of the best meals we have had anywhere!

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We did not do much more than eat, drink, spa, and casino, but it looked like there was plenty more to do had we wanted to.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
While we did not see any of the big shows, we did enjoy the lounge acts and DJ...all were very good.

Children's Programs

Did not travel with kids.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
This is where Celebrity really pulls away from the competition. The staff aboard Celebrity Edge were the absolute BEST we have ever experienced. Every single staff person who was close enough to make eye contact, at the very least, said hello. Most of them offered a more personal greeting. Of particular note were everyone in the casino - an unusually happy bunch; the crew working the Sunset Bar were also spectacular, and our cabin attendant, Laxman, left us wanting for nothing. Like a ninja, he was right there when we needed anything. Lastly, the folks at guest services were amazing. I had questions about statement charges and they were quick to explain or resolve them without any hesitation.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
This ship was as nice and clean and modern as any hotel we have ever enjoyed. In particular, we appreciated the attention to every tiny detail; subtle lighting and soft background music where you would not expect it; we did not see any space that wasn't something to see.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
While it seemed a tad smaller than what we usually have, it felt plenty big enough - if that makes any sense. It was decorated perfectly and there was more storage space than we would ever need. The lighting and fixtures and fine touches all exuded elegance. The biggest difference for us was the infinite veranda. We are balcony people, so this was a huge change. For a cold weather trip like Alaska, we LOVED it!! It was amazing sleeping with the window open feeling the cold air and hearing the waves. A pillow over the eyes solved the lighting problem easily. I don't think I would want this room type on a hot weather itinerary because of the humidity and because the AC shuts off when the window is open, but for Alaska, it was perfect.

Ship tip

If you are a spa person, spend the extra money for the thermal suite access. That was our getaway from our get away.

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington

Seattle is Seattle. Nothing bad to say.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Prep and dress for rain and love it. The Lumberjack show was way too much fun!!! Only go if you want to have a great time laughing and cheering for your team. Also, we found a newer restaurant called the Krabby Crab on Main Street. The Chowder and Crabbie Patties (whatever they were) were incredible.

CRUISE ENDICOTT ARM & DAWES GLACIER

5 out of 5
With the Thermal Suite access, we were able to observe the glacier from a semi-private viewing deck with hot cocoa. It was...glorious.

Juneau, Alaska

We did the Taku Glacier Helicopter & Air Boat Adventure...it was the best excursion we have ever done ANYWHERE!! The helicopter lifts you up over the mountains to a tiny landing pad for an airboat tour around Taku Glacier. The Airboat guys are great and we saw bear, beaver, and bald eagle all while zipping around on remote waterways. Then the helicopter returned to fly us to the top of the Glacier where we got out, walked on the Glacier and drank from it. It was worth every penny.

Skagway, Alaska

5 out of 5
Skagway is like the Austin of Alaska - quirky, weird, and fun! We did the White Pass Railway / Sled Dog / Gold Mining excursion. It was WAAAYYYY TOOOO LONG!!! The train was breathtaking and the dogs were super fun and interesting, but the gold mining was for elementary school kids.

Bring binoculars.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Waited until our group was called and walked right off. Could not have been easier. Once off the ship, though, the pier was crammed with thousands of people from two ships and the traffic & pedestrian control workers were even ruder and angrier and less professional than when we arrived. Once again, I cannot believe Celebrity would tolerate such garbage service in their name. I know they are not employed by Celebrity, but they represent you. Do better.
