Overall - it was a decent experience. We did not opt for the internet package as we wanted to unplug and unwind. So, it was a relaxing time. The ship's securtiy was there but not obtrisive. Obviously, from events in the local news over the last few months, Carnival Cruises are gaining a reputation for having unruly passengers. And our cruise was no different as we witnesses a small incident that was fueled by too much alcohol. But that is to be expected when you get a bunch of adult juvenilles onboard and pack them in a small area at the back of the ship. You hang around in bars and taverns long enough, you will see altercations fueled by "liquid courage" - and this cruise was no different Overall, though, it did not detract from the good time that we had. There were plenty of other fun activities to distract us.
Embarkation
4 out of 5
The embarkation experience was fairly quick and well staffed. All though am much of a deal is being made about not showing up early and coming at your appointed time, I saw several people that did just that - arriving early.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
3 out of 5
The buffets were usually crowded which is to be expected when traveling on a ship with a 4K person capacity. The dining room staff was very attentive but the food was "middle of the road".
Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
The onboard activities are where Carnival really shines. Great ammenities for families with children.
Entertainment
3 out of 5
The two comedians that we saw were okay. They made us laugh but the shows were not that good and they were way late at night. The music played on the Lido deck was appropriate but when the DJ and nightly parties took place - the PA volume was WAY to high. It was like the staff was trying way too hard.
Children's Programs
We did not travel with any children. Though the ones that we saw on board seemed to be having a great time.
Service and Staff
4 out of 5
The staff did a good job. i was a little shocked to find that there was no turndown serivce in stateroom. But I suppose that is to be expected in the time of Covid. I presume that the cruise line is trying limit their employee exposure by entering the guest rooms as little as possible. The dining room wait staff did a ok job. They delivered the food in a mostly timely fashion. Though the small details, like keeping the drink glasses topped off, were often missed. Overall, it was not bad but don;t expect 5 star wait service.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
The "grand atrium" is way smaller than some of the other ships that we have crusied on. And there were no "glass elevators" there. Overall, the interior common spaces seemed rather small. But what do you expect from a standard sized ship that has been maximized to carry 4K people? The micro brewery, in pariticular, seemed like a "kitsch" idea but never was very well attended in my opinion. It was hard to find and the space may be better utilized for a wider audience.
Cabin / Stateroom
4 out of 5
It was a decent cabin. The carpet looked a little worn, but other than that, it was good. The bed and linens were comfortable.
Ship tip
Be prepared for crowds and try to have a positive attitude.
This port reminded me of the smaller carribean islands from 20-30 years ago. Great vibe and kitsch stores trying to unload the tourists of their cash. But I did feel safe there.
The port area is safe though everything is way over priced. It is usually crowded as the island has done a good job of getting pier space to handle as many large cruise ships as possible. Use extreme caution if you leave the protected port area. Expect to be approached by many people trying to interact with you. They will be selling you on everything from T shirts to opioids! Avoid walking by yourself......
It was good. I was surprised how quickly they can empty the ship. Using facial recognition by the US Imigraion Services really speeds things up. Though I'm quite sure some people with be unhappy with it. Just be aware that it is a technology that the US Government is now using.
Appreciate your feedback. Reading the reviews, I’ve noticed that Carnival isn’t the only cruise line with fights , but the one that gets the most attention. Glad it was only a small altercation on your ship.
