Review summary

Cruise was the best vacation we ever had and we have been on a lot of vacations and 6 cruise ships including 1 Royal Caribbean  cruise.  To start from the beginning,  embarkation was smooth, the whole process probably  took about 20 minutes at the most and that was for 4 people.  We had 2 cabins on the 8th floor.  The cabins were made up the way we requested previously online,  me and my wife had the 1 full size and my 2 boys had 2 twin beds.  Rooms were very clean and typical for a cruise ship.   Lido deck was fun, of course we all hit Guy's up for burgers.  The blue iguana was nice too, soft shelled tacos on one side and taco salads and burritos with all the trimmings on the other side.  Buffets were kinda bland though.   What they would do basically was 'rename' items that were offered in the dining room and serve them up fresh.  Buffet wasn't too bad but I  would hate to be on a ship that only had buffet cuisine and no special eateries. The fresh fruit kinda saved the buffets in my opinion. Breakfast was decent but my boys complained about the pancake  syrup. Said it was  watery.?  Seafood Shack was excellent.  My wife loves fried shrimp and is very hard to please when it comes to them,  these were fresher and better than your typical fast food restaurant and they weren't the breaded panko shrimp either that they sometimes serve in the dining room.  These were actual hand breaded and fried, fresh shrimp.  Definitely worth the extra money.   We only done the dining room 3 times out of the 8 days we were on the ship.  There were just too many other choices to be confined and a constant presence in the dining room every night.  But when we were there the food was good, decent quality  The lamb chops were good and somewhat memorable.   The Italian resturant ,i think it's something like Cupina cuchina or something similar to that was very good also.  I had the Garlic shrimp fettuccine Alfredo  and my wife had the meat lasagna.   Worth the small upcharge also but on some days it was free, a scaled down version of there offerings.  My favorite restaurant on the whole ship though was the Guy's Pig and Anchor joint.  Delicious!  I stayed away on the first sea day because i thought all they served was pork until someone told me they had beef ribs and  chicken.  Barbecue  was some of the best i ever had on sea or land.  Macroni and  cheese was really good.   The sauces were great too.  The restaurant was only open on sea days and only for a couple of hours and there was always a line but it was worth it,  they even could have charged and I wouldnt have had a problem with paying, it was that good.  Entertainment on the ship was always great.  They had the Nba finals playing on the Lido deck and we watched every game and made new friends.  Game shows were awesome, we really liked the Hasbro and the Quest Game show.  My wife really liked the cruise director, he was entertaining and full of spontaneous energy but i didn't like his Scottish accent.  Layout of the ship was not a problem and it was always clean,  the staff were always picking up plates  and trash.  The gym was kinda small though for a ship that size in my opinion.  The ports of call were great also, with my favorite being the Dominican republic . They all were good though. Beaches in Aruba are a must see.  All in all this is a really nice new, up to date ship with a nice southern Caribbean itinerary.  If you can afford it,  book it.  Worth every penny.

Ship tip

Pay attention to the luggage tag numbers you get. If you get a high number, ie: 10 and above, you might wanna self assist on your luggage because it will be that much longer before you can get off the ship if you are in a rush.

When we got off the ship at the port in La Romana we caught the city bus to the downtown square. It was a large urban, crowded area where vendors were set up, showcasing their wares, anticipating 'ship day '. I think the fare for the bus was maybe 3 or 4 dollars a person, roundtrip. buses would leave every 15 minutes, last trip back to the ship was at 3. From the square you have options,. You can choose to explore a small area by yourself, catch taxis to various places, or take a walking tour guide. We initially tried to get a taxi/ van but the ac didn't work and my wife wasn't cool with it. so we opted for the last option, this one man , who was one of many , walking tour guides in easily identifiable red shirts and licensed. He told us basically he would escort us around the city, shopping. This was no problem for me as i tend to get comfortable easily. Once i was comfortable, my family was. We walked for about an 45 minutes, both ways, we visited many places during that time but one that stood out was this huge store called ' Jumbo ' it was similar to A Wal-Mart. they also had a food court at this store. My son's also got haircuts while we were in La Romana, walking back to the port from this urban barber shop that was on our route, the owner spotted us, came across the street, talked to me and it went from there. Really positive experience. From there, back to the Square, then back on the bus, then back to the port, then back on the ship. Lol. I can't be any more descriptive than this. But the whole family really enjoyed this port though.

Your question states" what did you do in DP? The answer is " he got a walking tour" and the beach he was referring to was in Aruba.

bamboo    7 years ago

I am well aware of what he said. I had a specific? About restaurants and beaches in DR I was not asking about Aruba.

Weber7    7 years ago

He already said he got a walking guided tour in the DP & he can't rememberthe name of beach in Aruba.

What did you do in Dominican Rep? Names of beaches, restaurants. Did you take a taxi?

Thanks mbdan but you gonna see for yourself and you gonna be like' he was spot on ' lol. Second nicest cruise i went on was independence of the seas. It was nice but it didn't have nothing on the Vista.

I'll do some further research, I've heard it has beautiful beaches. Beach day sounds like our plan. Thanks again

Can't think of the name of the beach that the tour guide took us to, he mentioned it but i don't Remember the name or the sign. But beautiful nonetheless and from what i heard typical of Aruba.

Thanks, really looking forward to it. Beach idea for Aruba?

Got A walking guided tour. most of the people who comment negatively on Dominican republic main gripe is the poverty, but the same thing goes on in New York city, Atlanta and a lot of the other major cites. When you choose to get off at a port city you need to realize that you are these a major source of income for these people. They actually look forward to the ships docking. it's a life line so to speak for them. But really, it's a beautiful country with beautiful people. i would have liked to get more inland to really immerse in the culture. Me and my wife are gonna fly into either Montego bay or Punta Cana next year and stay at one of the resorts.
