Review summary

We had a great trip. We originally booked it for my husband to have some dental repairs done and looked at the cruise as an incidental part of it. However, we had such friendly service delivered with a smile, great entertainment and we met great people who made the cruise really fun. We will miss having the Valor in Galveston.

Embarkation

2 out of 5
Embarkation was awful due to the flooding in Galveston. Carnival really dropped the ball and failed to communicate with the guests. We did not find out until 4pm that we were sailing 3 hours late.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The food in the main dining room was very good, considering ours was gluten free. The food in the steakhouse was also good, but because we sailed late and were not in international waters we did not get our wine until we were nearly finished. It was also freezing cold in the steakhouse and we did not enjoy the experience as much as we usually do. Also, the waiters there were not so friendly. Our dining room waiters were great. David and Efrain from Peru and Widana from Indonesia took great care of us all week. We liked them so much that we canceled our second reservation in the steakhouse.

Onboard Activities

Prometheus Pool

5 out of 5

So glad they went back to an adults only pool! The last time we sailed the Valor was when they made the aft pool available to everyone. This time there was a lifeguard and he told multiple people that their children were not allowed in the pool. It was a much nicer atmosphere back there than at the main pool - much more relaxing.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The musicians around the ship including were great. As usual it was too loud on the Lido, so we stayed at the aft pool where the music was more to our liking. Don't miss America Rocks the last night. Great show!

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Our cabin steward ,Hendro, was excellent. We chose service twice a day and he did so with a smile. Our cabin was always cleaned up when we got back from breakfast. We sent our laundry and it was already back in the cabin when we got back from Progreso at 5pm. We enjoyed our waiters David, Efrain and Widana. The entertainment director, Louie, and the Hotel Director, Andy, were great fun. The Captain was also very friendly and always stopped to talk to us whenever he saw us. We knew the Bar Manager, Anthony, from previous cruises and enjoyed seeing him again.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Conquest class ships are my favorite in the fleet. This was our second time on the Valor and it was better than the first time. They were replacing furniture throughout the week with newly upholstered pieces appeared on the Promenade and down in the lobby. Our cabin was very clean and in great working order. I did not notice anything amiss throughout the ship.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The cabin was well maintained. Best of all it was convenient to the Lido without hearing any of the noise from either the Lido or the Atrium. Great location! Great room steward!

Ports of call

Galveston, Texas

5 out of 5
We love Galveston because it is close to our home. The flooding on embarkation day was horrible and we had a hard time getting there. Debarkation was much easier and thankfully, our car started. Considering the depth of water we went through we were very pleased. I can't say enough good things about Port Parking.

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
Cozumel is one of our favorite ports. We had reservations at Mr. Sanchos, but because the ship arrived late we ended up not going. We see the dentist there and originally had 10 am appointments. We had to push them to noon. By the time we left the dentist it was 1pm so we just went to Panchos Backyard for lunch and then got back on the ship and swam at the aft adults only pool.

Progreso (Merida), Mexico

5 out of 5
We have been there many times and done many excursions to the ruins, Merida, etc. We originally planned to stay on the ship, but because we did not get to the beach in Cozumel, we decided to book the Mi Casa Es Su Casa excursion. We had a fabulous time. There were 35 people on the bus. There were plenty of loungers and plenty of shade between the 2 pools and the beach. The tour guide, Super Mario, was great. He had a wealth of knowledge about the area and we got to chat with him quite a bit while at the beach house about his life in Mexico. The bar waiter continually circulated bringing drinks and the buffet was open the entire time we were there. The food was tasty. The Guacamole lesson was fun. We will definitely book this excursion the next time we are in Progreso, Yucatan.
