Review summary

First, I would say that the cruise was very enjoyable.  The service staff was great.  The food was real good.  My only gripes are with the port cities and Carnival's Guest Services.  My impression from Guest Services is that if you aren't going to do an excursion with them, they won't be very helpful.  We have a big family, so paying for these excursions is out of the budget.  So, I called Guest Services several times for advice.  No one could help.  I even spoke to one person that said that they didn't know because they have never been to that port city.  So what ended up happening was we paid we too much to go to a beach in Cozumel.  Progresso was a nightmare because we went to the public beach and had no idea that we were going to hounded constantly by people trying to sell stuff to us.  This even happened while we were laying down on the beach.

The private beach we went to was nice, but it was expensive. Would have liked to know about other options that were cheaper.

Progreso (Merida), Mexico

Don't go to the public beach.

I saw the excursions listed that carnival was advertising, and they were too expensive for us.  (We had 6 in our party; 4 of which were kids).  I would have liked to enjoy the port cities without having to pay a lot.  I was told to google forums, but there are so many and hard to navigate.  Overall, we enjoyed it, just wish Carnival was a more helpful.

We got back last week and in Cozumel we booked the snorkeling with sea turtles and cavern snorkel. It was an awesome excursion! I would highly recommend it, but be a decent swimmer. If you aren't, the guides will help, but it was tough to swim and make sure my young son was doing ok too. As for progresso, we did the Dzibilchaltun ruins and Mexican fiesta. We had a blast! endless drinks at fiesta.

Why did you not go to the shore excursions desk instead of guest services? The cruise director and cruise staff could also give you advice.

We have been to this port before on a previous cruise. ( progresso was one we passed on. We enjoyed laying in the sun and when people came back we heard bad reviews so we were glad we just stayed on board) but Cozumel is always wonderful we enjoy Mr. Sanchos and it never disappoints. We have been there every time we went on previous cruises and have a blast each time without those nagging people.

We did the same ports last week. And, we also had a big group. We actually did a beach with included alcohol from one of the vendors on this site and really enjoyed it (Progreso). Not cheap but cheaper than Carnival. I have never done this but I know a lot of people just get off the ship and find something from all those people on the dock. I really wouldn't take that question to guest services.
