Review summary

Great food! Would not recommend the Bonsai sushi place because of the experience my wife and daughter had. Would not recommend Family Harbor Suites. Great entertainment.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We chose a later time to board 2-2:30 pm. At that time it was easy to get on board with less crowd. It also helped being priority which moved us along much faster.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
I enjoyed the food on board. However my daughter and wife got sick eating at the Bonsai sushi place. They were also a little deceiving when we booked a lunch on the sushi side for lunch. The hostess we booked with told us we needed a reservation for the sushi side. We did that. When they arrived for lunch they tried to sit them on the Teppenyaki side. After my wife talked to them about it, they wanted to charge us for their mistake. They told us that a reservation was not required for the sushi side. They ended up not doing that by they should give proper info when trying to book a reservation. My wife and daughter were the ones who ate. My wife had stomach issues for about a day after eating there. My daughter is still having stomach issues from eating. They narrowed it down to the sushi my wife ordered and daughter tried. The worst part is that my daughter had to stay on board when we landed in Ensenada because she was so sick. As someone who has worked in the food industry I know they will deflect this to their signs that warn you eating undercooked or raw food can cause illness. Beware and hope no one else has to go through this.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We had a blast with all of the activities. The only complaint I have is the amount of chemicals they have in the pool. My 6 and 3 year old always came back with their sinuses and throats burning after being in the pool. I also experienced this when I went swimming. The water is pretty salty so I’m not sure if they are treating saltwater or if it’s just loaded up with chemicals. I was also under the impression that kids needed to be potty trained to be in the splash pad so it was pretty disgusting to watch a parent change a non-water diaper filled with poop right there at the splash pad.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Loved all of the shows we watched. Our favorite was Celestial Strings.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
Our kids loved Camp Ocean and their activities. They were hesitant at first but wanted to go by day 3.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Our steward and servers were the best and treated our kids very well. Our boys even got an embroidered pillow case as a souvenir. Bad follow up with guest services regarding our horrible sleeping experience in stateroom 2414.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
It was great and easy to navigate the ship. The elevators were fairly fast because of the dedicated cars going to the same locations. The ship always remained pretty clean.

Cabin / Stateroom

The room itself was awesome. It was the perfect size for the family. The extreme downside and thing that made me mad was apparently this stateroom sits right below their dish station on the 3rd floor. Every single night from about 2:30 am-6 am we would hear very loud bangs-and these bangs sounded like a car hit the side of the ship. We also heard the loading of the dishwasher, dragging of things across the floor, footsteps, and everything I know you would hear in a dish station from personal experience working as a chef. All of this woke us up every single night so sleeping through the night was not an option for us-especially my 3 year old who woke up screaming every time these loud noises would happen. I brought this up to guest services who never followed up with me. Terrible customer service. I also brought it up to our steward who told me that the previous guests complained about the same thing. This made me angry because if Carnival knows about the noise levels in suites that are made for families-why is there not a disclaimer about the noise levels? And why put families in the noisiest part of the ship. I also talked to another dad who said he could hear the night club all night long. Would not recommend Family Harbor Suites because of this and the bad customer service regarding our legitimate concerns.

Ship tip

Do not book Family Harbor Suites unless you and your family can go without sleep

Ports of call

Long Beach (Los Angeles), California

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

3 out of 5
It was great being in Cabo but you get bombarded by street vendors the entire time you are there. Would recommend booking an excursion once you get on shore for much cheaper than the cruise will offer.

Ensenada, Mexico

5 out of 5
Great food. We took a shuttle and paid much less to go to the Blow hole and flea market which has much better prices than any place near the ship.

Disembarkation

It was fast and easy especially since we carried all of our bags off ourselves.

The noise issue is exactly why I look at the ship's deck plan before selecting a cabin

We already have a Family Harbor cabin booked for next year. Your experience has me worried now.
