Review summary

Overall, this was a fantastic cruise. We really enjoyed the brand new ship and all of the wonderful facilities and entertainment it has to offer. It was great fun to welcome in 2020 onboard! It was an incredible experience from start to end.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Embarkation was quick and efficient. It was a little chaotic to drop bags off with porters, but nevertheless it was quick and we were soon inside the terminal. There was virtually no waiting and within 15-20 minutes we were onboard the ship!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
There is a wide variety of delicious dining options. The buffet has a wide selection of good food and is well laid-out. The main dining room also had a good selection of food and the service was excellent every night. Guy's Burgers were fantastic as always.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
There is loads to do on this ship! There is an expansive spa and fitness center, along with a massive waterpark! The ropes course and sky ride were excellent too (however the line for sky ride can get very long at peak times). I also tried the Skyzone which was good fun and reasonably priced for the hour ($12). We also did a cake decorating class in the Carnival Kitchen, which was enjoyable.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
There was loads of entertainment options every day, all of which were fantastic. The live bands were excellent and the DJs good too. Emma (cruise director) did an amazing job of keeping everyone entertained and having fun, particularly on New Year's Eve! The main stage shows were exceptional - some of the best I have experienced. Rock Revolution was particularly outstanding, with awesome lighting (including drones)!

Children's Programs

Did not use.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The service from all the staff around the ship was excellent. Everybody was friendly and helpful! Particular mention must go to Panya (cabin steward), Susanna (spa) and Lei Lei (fun squad).

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
The ship is very nicely designed with great facilities. It is well laid out and easy to find things. Everywhere on board was in excellent condition (expected as its new ship though!) and kept very clean and tidy.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
This was a spa balcony cabin on deck 11. It was the perfect size and very comfortable. It had everything we needed and ample storage space. Our cabin steward, Panya, was excellent and kept the room clean and tidy.

Ports of call

Long Beach (Los Angeles), California

5 out of 5
Good port for embarkation/disembarkation. Nice area, great proximity to the Queen Mary!

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

5 out of 5
In Cabo San Lucas we did a whale watching excursion. This included an enjoyable boat ride and spectacular views of whales, plus a stop to look at the 'Los Arcos' rock formation. It was excellent.

Mazatlan, Mexico

4 out of 5
Mazatlan was an interesting port to visit. We did a city tour, which included watching the cliff divers, as well as time in the city center to walk around and visit the Church. However, we did not find the 'Golden Zone' for shopping to be a particularly nice area.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

5 out of 5
In Puerto Vallarta we took a taxi from the cruise port to the city center and walked around and visited the Church. Unfortunately, it was pouring with rain that day, meaning we did not spend that much time/fully enjoy the area. However, from what we did see it looked like a lovely place that we would like to return to (in the Sunshine)!

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Disembarkation was fairly efficient and well organized. We tagged our bags and were off the ship a little later than anticipated, but were kept informed as to the reason for the delay. Once inside the terminal we had to wait in line for a while to get our bags and then again for customs. Overall the process took around 1 hour. We had a shuttle to LAX booked through Carnival, which left promptly and got us to the airport in plenty of time for our flight.

Have a Cloud 9 Spa stateroom booked for March 2022, hope things are sailing again out of California!
