Review summary

Overall, the cruise was somewhat disappointing. The original itinerary was changed due to hurricane Irma, so we wound up going to several places that we had been to before. We felt that the food was subpar, and the entertainment was good but not great.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We thought that Port Canaveral did an excellent job in expediting the embarkation process. All employees were friendly, and we moved quickly through the process.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

2 out of 5
We felt that the menu selections were poor and the quality of the meals was ordinary at best. We have normally been pleased with meals on Carnival ships, but not this time. The meal at the Steakhouse was a real disappointment. My wife's fillet was tough and stringy, and I wound up getting sick before I could finish my meal. Not sure if I had an intestinal virus or food poisoning. (I think it was the spinach salad.) I had to report to Medical the following morning, and they quarantined me for 24 hours. I hadn't been that severely ill in a long time.

Onboard Activities

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The singer and dancers were initially not impressive, but the shows towards the end of the cruise were well done.

Children's Programs

We had no kids with us.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The staff on the ship were very friendly, polite and helpful. Our cabin steward, Arvin, was great. The service staff in the main dining room were also very good.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
The ship appeared to be very clean. the ship's design made it a little confusing to navigate around it. Ran into a couple of dead ends that we had to backtrack and change deck levels to get around.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The mini-suite was spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable. The balcony was narrower than what we have experienced on other ships, but it was adequate. The bed was very comfortable.

Ship tip

If you sail on the Magic, we suggest you take some time on the first day to walk around the main decks so that you can get familiar with the ship's layout. This could help you in the upcoming days.

Ports of call

Port Canaveral, Florida

4 out of 5
The port was easily accessible, and I liked the fact that they had a parking garage. The embarkation and debarkation processes were very smooth and efficient.

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

3 out of 5
Clean port area, but not a whole lot to do.

Grand Turk Island Did not visit port

The ship couldn't dock due to high winds.

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Private Island)

5 out of 5
Carnival has a much nicer private island than Royal Caribbean. Good tender service and a great beach and swimming area. We thoroughly enjoyed our cabana.

Nassau, Bahamas Did not visit port

This was not part of the original itinerary, and we have been here a number of times, so we had no real interest to leave the ship.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
The process was smooth, efficient and quick.

They took Puerto Rico and St. Thomas off the itinerary and replaced them with Grand Turk and Nassau.
