Review summary
Boarding and settling-in - easy and quick.
Dining - Fixed-time dining was very pleasant. It appeared the Flex-time dining room was always packed and had an excessive wait. Steakhouse was "ok". Buffet options are wide-ranging with very little wait, but the pizza stand always had a long line.
Entertainment - A little bit of everything. Of note, the piano bar singer was awful, sorry. Somewhat skilled, but rather rude to the guests and he played the same setlist night after night. We enjoyed the comedy club each night; just get there early to get a seat, it fills up fast.
Ports-of-call:
- Cozumel Island, Mexico - We took the 45-minute ferry ride to the mainland. (BIG mistake... rough ride and a lot of wasted time. Made for a very anxious start to the day.) Once there, we took a (VERY bumpy and uncomfortable) 25-minute van ride to the Secret River/Underground cave excursion. The excursion was fine, but knowing we had a long and unpleasant ride back to the ship lessened the joy. I would NOT choose to do any excursion that takes you off of the island where you dock. Enjoy the time on the island somewhere.
- Belize - Tendered to the mainland and boarded a nice bus for a (surprisingly calm, relaxing, and narrated) two-hour ride straight west across the country to the Xunantunich Ruins. Worth every bit of the time and money spent... even with half the excursion time spent in transit.
- Mohangany Bay, Roatan Island, Honduras - Beautiful port with lots to do. We opted to go for a little van ride across the island to a rain forrest zip-line tour. Incredible. Huge iguanas and monkeys perched in the trees mere feet from your reach... high speeds with soft landings. We spent the remainder of the day on Tatyana Beach before taking the shuttle back to the ship.
- Costa Maya, Mexico - Sadly, an approaching hurricane kept us from stopping in port this day. We are looking forward to going back.
In general, it was a nice trip. Having sailed aboard the Carnival "Pride" out of Baltimore twice before, we had an idea of what to expect. "Magic" is similar, but given the opportunity, I'd choose to sail on the Pride again.

Costa Maya has a lot to offer for history and adventure buffs. Mayan ruins are our thing and we haven't seen them all yet. Great, well-educated tour guides seem to be the key to Costa Maya tours. The port shops are a great place to get trinkets, but spend your time on tours! You won't regret it.

I agree with the review. You didn't miss much at all at Costa Maya either. Its just a small cruise port with two bars and a pool and some shops. I felt it was more of a stop for the ship to waste time before heading home.
