Review summary

This was not a vacation for me. The lack of available child care options on Carnival is disgusting. Carnival charges half the price for a child under 2 and there are absolutely no child care options or activities for the child until after 10pm (they call it for the late owls). Sure you can use the play room if you'd like but you have to be there with them.  A whole day with your child, running after them, fighting to get them to sit still for dinner etc...who wants to wait until after 10 to go out?! I would put my son in stroller after dinner (730)and walk around the boat and look for a spot I could sit where it was not too loud  so that I can wait the 2 + hours to bring him up. So of course, I'd give up from boredom and end up in my room. The 2 nights I actually did use the 10pm child care, they threw him in a large room with all these screaming kids. When I came back, my son was up. The fact that they have no quiet room for sleeping kids is appalling. Plus they charge you for care after 10pm. If that is the case then why not give the option to take them for dinner so mommy and daddy can have some alone time? I will NEVER advise anyone to torture themselves with a cruise with small children. CARNIVAL YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR POLICIES!!!! I did not watch one show, did not participate in any activities, could not have a quiet dinner with my husband, I did not have a vacation. With the amount of money we spent on the boat (over $1,500) I should have had the time of my life. Sincerely, a very tired, frustrated mother who needs another vacation.

Wow! I am floored.... We have cruised every year with our son since he was 9 months old and he is 14 now. Each cruise holds special memories that are precious as a family. It's a vacation, not day care.

our first cruise with our 3yr old was a bit like hers. fortunately we made friends with a couple with a 4yr old and by the 2nd night we took turns watching the kids.our kids were able to go to camp but just couldnt convince them to go without crying. now shes 5 and its her 3rd cruise she loves camp ocean. we spent 14 days at sea and she never wanted us around

Tumeka    9 years ago

Aw... We didn't start bringing our kids until they were older. My youngest was 11 for his first cruise. Before that they stayed with my mom and me and hubby would go. 😉

stacytucker    9 years ago

They accept them at camp carnival at age 3. Her child was not that age yet, so they would t accept him during the regular times.

I just got off the ship Last weekend and my 3-year old was in their daycare for a couple of hours here and there. They even gave me a phone to call and check-in whenever I wanted. There was also no charge associated with this service during the day.

My brother-in-law & his wife are bringing their 13 month old. She is the 1st baby in the family for over 18 years. The baby will have 2 "girl" cousins (ages 18 & 19), 2 aunts, & 2 grandmas so we think we'll be ok. They know what they'll have to give up but they're not party animals.

As a parent who has traveled with kids as young as 6 months on large trips I just can't imagine what you were thinking? If you did not want to have to entertain your young child you should have brought along a nanny or left them home with family! I agree all parents need a break and a vacation but it clearly states in information on web site how only kids need to be to participate!

bmac614    9 years ago

My thoughts exactly!!!!!! Makes no sense to complain that no one would watch your kid 24/7. At least that is what it sounds like. Not that she said that

sharim    9 years ago

if you didn't want to spend your vacation with your child why did you bring him?

Try DISNEY,its a Child freindly Cruiseline "obviously" I just dont like it when People Blame Carnival , that is not fair ,,,,, Our upcoming Cruise Feb ,20th. is our 7th on Carnival , and EVERY time we go their are folks with unhappy ,screaming toddlers , although i do feel for the parents because they prob. figured it would be a goood family Vacation ,,, NOT ON CARNIVAL ,, Once again Disney yes ... So it just angers me that people blame it on Carnival .... I LOVE CARNIVAL 💝

sjroc04    9 years ago

I don't expect people to take care of my kids either. you should be making memories not crying because someone would not watch your children when you demand it. Disney is a fine cruise line and is for children try that next time.

bmac614    9 years ago

That's cool. We hope to try the breeze next year as it will be in Galveston, the closest port to us

bmac614    9 years ago

On embarkation day, our son was dancing in the pool area. Right in the middle of the crowd. He also loved the cove. Watching the water go by

stacytucker    9 years ago

Exactly, try it out first before you put children into it. I have a friend on the Breeze right now with her 1 yr old. They are having a blast. On her Social media, she says her son is loving every minute.

As a parent of young children, I can completely understand the thoughts on the review, however, your expectation level was way too high.  You cannot expect that someone will watch your child as you have the time of your life.  If that is the case, leave them with your family.  Trust me, been there and done that.  However, having said that, you should have made the most of it with your child.  When life hands you lemons...

Next time adult cruise eh?

bmac614    9 years ago

On our first it was just her and I. 2010 was our first.. Allure

stacytucker    9 years ago

Maybe leave the lil guy at home. We did that for the first one my hubby went on. My cousin kept our son for the week. We wanted alone time, son was 2, so it just made sense to us.

bmac614    9 years ago

My wife and I totally agree. Unpack once and not to many worries.

stacytucker    9 years ago

Next Dec will be 11th for me and 6th for hubby and they definitely get better as we go. It's the best type of vacation ever and is less expensive than a land vacation.

bmac614    9 years ago

She may need to try holland America, or whatever other lines out there for the more subdued crowd. The mainstream family cruises seems to frustrating for her.

bmac614    9 years ago

Oh I wouldn't either. It's gets better the more you go. We have only been on 2 so still junior cruisers lol. But had a tremendous time on both.

stacytucker    9 years ago

She sounds as if she has been a stay-at-home mom and just needed a break. She chose her words incorrectly. I am still a stay-at-home mom, so I understand. I always need a break. Lol But it's not torture to make memories. Maybe the expectations were too high mixed with needing a break, it just didn't mix for her. I wouldn't give up on cruising all together, if I were her.

Did the research and thought hey, why not can't be that bad. Especially since I stayed home with him until 2 Mos ago. Boy was I wrong! This review is mainly for parents who think they can do it. Unless you go with grandparents it totally is not worth the mone and frustration. Just wait until the kid is older. Cruise lines should definitely look into changing these rules or just not allowing kids under 2 or not charging for kids under 2. Parents really don't know how hard it is to cruise with a toddler until you actually do it.

Thanks for the reply.

Now book another cruise for just the adults.

This is good advice for Parents who think they can do this. I don't think it will be fun for the A) child. B) parents C) other travellers.

bmac614    9 years ago

I don't like it when she called it torture when bringing children on a cruise. That is very sad she would even think that. My opinion

stacytucker    9 years ago

Ours started when he was 4, and loved camp carnival! Lol. He is getting ready next year for his 5th.

bmac614    9 years ago

I would not expect other people to watch our children while on vacation.

bmac614    9 years ago

We just recently took our 3 year old on the magic and he had an absolute blast. We tried the camp carnival and he didn't care for it. Which was ok because that gave us a week of awesome memories with this being his first cruise. People are different.

stacytucker    9 years ago

As if you wasted your money. You didn't!! You made memories. Sorry for two post, it wouldn't let me put all into one.

bmac614    9 years ago

Wow wow wow!!!! To say you didn't have a good time because you couldn't find a 'babysitter' on a cruise is weak. You knew going in kids that age can have trouble adapting. It's not Carnivals fault. And yes it does state that after 10pm there is a charge.

stacytucker    9 years ago

Sarah, I'm not trying to bash either. I hate message boards b/c you can't hear. Lol when my son was 2, I started researching and knew that he couldn't go into the child care area without me or his dad. We didn't take him on one until he was about 4. He is 11 now and loves them. A vacation is all what you make of it and surely there was something you liked. I absolutely hate the idea that you feel

BDRebel    9 years ago

Sarah - please don't think I am trying to bash you with this post -- only trying to reinforce your last post.

Children at that age will probably not enjoy the trip. In easy terms, their whole world is changed -- the movement of the "ground", the constant noise, etc. At that age they probably need to be home with family (or other caregiver).

Really not until the age of around 5 are they able to fully appreciate the vacation as it is meant to be.

Sorry it was not what you expected. Did you do any research before you went? If you had, then you would have known these policies. Actually, I think it's the same with all cruise lines!!

ftlgary1    9 years ago

heres an idea, how about taking responsibility for your child and not counting on someone e eles to take care of him, or dont take him on a cruise...

dede1116    9 years ago

Who in their right mind expects to have a good time bringing a 2 year old along? Bawahaha!

Johngold    9 years ago

OK,

Your status states that you have done 4-6 cruises, so I'm guessing there is some experience there. Taking a 2 year old on a cruise and expecting a relaxing time for you is naïve to say the least. What prompted you to take a child that young along on a Carnival Cruise? Have other cruise lines made it easier for small children?

Have you travelled with the child before, or other children? Please fill in some details. After all that.... I hope you buy a nice get-a-way for yourself and your husband---no kids....
