Review summary

hurricane harvey ruined the cruise. I will write more after my refund process. I wouldn't have gone on the cruise because of the hurricane, but customer service said that if the ship shows up and I'm not there, I don't get a dime back. So I traveled to Houston for the cruise and was stuck in a hotel for days. I paid over $800 on hotel and food. I will let everybody know if carnival cruise lines gives me a refund on the hotel I spent.

Uhh just caceling a cruise at any time is your fault not the cruise lines my insurance covers hotel, clothing food if delayed or bags are lost, as well as flights to catch the ship if you miss the sailing due to travel delays. No insurance company covers hey I decided to not show up even though the ship was there... sad lesson, I guess you should look into better insurance

shingaling    7 years ago

Well doublemates, you're perfectly free to cancel your cruise. And you agreed to the terms when you booked, so I don't get the complaining now. And it sounds like you bought crappy trip insurance. Let me guess ... through the cruiseline??

doublemates    7 years ago

Some of you don't get. We are not being incentive about what people have lost. Some of us are Harvey survivors as well. All we are is discussing that we are not going to get a refund if we cancel our cruise. And for the comment if being cheap on not purchasing insurance. I DID purchase insurance. Don't take out your frustrations out on some people that just would like to cancel and receive credit or a refund.

a couple of points... first poor consumer practices lead to over paying, do your homework and BTW it is your responsibility to figure it out. second buy trip insurance, tough lesson here but you saved what 120.00 on the toaol price? If you cannot afford to lose money it is well spent, what if you got sick? missed the boat? were delayed by airline issues? all of which are covered. Lastly, bitching because your vacation was delayed or canceled is really a first world problem! How shallow are you? people died, people lost their homes, people lost sentimental things that cannot be replaced. Alittle perspective and reflection is warranted here...

Wow .....this is unbelievable to think that carnival or any lines should refund your hotel that's why you should have insurance to be refunded ya right ..... good luck in trying to get back (your Hotel and food )you have got to be joking ??this is a joke right ........ you are cruising in cyclone season so what do you expect some people have lost everything and your worried about lousy dollars 💵 GO AWAY .........

You cannot complain if you're too cheap to buy insurance! A simple Google search will return several options at much cheaper prices and better coverage than the cruise lines private policies. And be thankful you still have a home, a car, a job to go, you health, your life. A lot of people just lost all of that.

Only higher prices we've ever seen during those months are the specific weeks of the holidays: thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years.) We sail this year the week after thanksgiving. It's 1/2 what the fare was the week of thanksgiving. Same thing for the week after New Years: 1/2. But some do love cruising on the holidays, and for them it's worth it.

Sorry I didn't set the price, just put in ocean suite and compared prices. Was told Nov, Dec, and Jan was because of holidays.

shingaling    7 years ago

That's interesting, Rmann51, and the complete opposite of every cruise we have booked. We always stay on aft balcs (facing the wake), and they are way more expensive March-October than when we cruise, November-February.

Rmann51    7 years ago

Read your cruise contract, really READ IT, then if you don't like it don't take the cruise!

Rmann51    7 years ago

My suite was going to cost 1700.00 more in Jan, as opposed to Sept. I also bought insurance so that I do not lose what I paid

shingaling    7 years ago

Rates in storm season are higher, not lower. Rates on Caribbean cruises are almost 1/2 from November to February (only time we cruise). Never understood why people pay MORE for to cruise during storm season....

sassi    7 years ago

yeah I agree I never broke any cruises around hurricane season August September October and sometimes even in November it maybe a cheap cruise but it's so not worth it I always go in January but I've also learned in a report out of Galveston

lab341    7 years ago

Don't book hurricane season so it ruins your cruise. I know it's the cheapest time to cruise and people chance it all the time, it's a gamble. Did you ask the Casino for a refund and your gratuity back as well?

shingaling    7 years ago

doublemates, did you purchase your trip ins through the cruiseline, or privately? There's usually much better coverage if you purchase privately (and it's way cheaper). Also, if you read your cruise contract you should know the terms of cancellation. With all the risks of cruising during storm season, it's critical to know what your options and responsibilities are.

I purchased insurance and tried to cancel. I wanted to cancel our trip because of Irma and I didn't want to be navigated somewhere that I've already been to. They responded by telling me I won't get my money back, and that after evaluating my claim I probably will be refunded possibly 75 percent back.

some ppl lost a lot more than just a cruise

twangster    7 years ago

I'm sure this was disappointing. It seems unfair to rate the ship only 1 star because of weather beyond the ships control. Cruising in hurricane season has risk and no one could predict how long the port, which is not owned or operated by any cruise line would remain closed. I would be surprised if they reimburse your hotel expenses, that is what travel insurance is for.

Rmann51    7 years ago

People this is why you should always buy vacation insurance, the cost is little but if you need it the pay off is great.

sassi    7 years ago

it's called Mother Nature the cruise line has nothing to do with it

slealey    7 years ago

that's exactly what Carnival is telling me. They are saying no refund. I am to leave from Ft. Lauderdale on Saturday. yes please update us on the refund process.

Rmann51    7 years ago

If you bought insurance they will read your contract

shingaling    7 years ago

If you purchased halfway decent trip insurance (hopefully not through the cruiseline) it will cover all those expenses. The cruiselines do not.
