Review summary

I think the trick to cruising is to start on a smaller ship and work your way up.  Having previously been on the Carnival Conquest (sister ship to the Freedom) and then on the Carnival Magic, it was a disappointment being on the Freedom.  The Magic is much newer and bigger and more to do on board.  The Freedom felt like a step backwards.  Part of the cruise excitement is to explore the ship.  Once you've been on one class of ship, the other sister ships are basically the same.  I was not impressed by the Key West, Freeport, Nassau itinerary on this trip.  Key West was nice and clean and we did a snorkel excursion which was nice.  There wasn't much else to see beyond the port tourist traps.  Freeport Bahamas is a real dump of a port.  It is located in a shipping area.  The island tour was depressing and we were told constantly about all of the things that were destroyed in past hurricanes but never rebuilt.  There was a very nice park called Garden of the Groves that we toured. That was probably the highlight of that excursion.   Nassau was a much more lively port than Freeport.  There was alot of activity and plenty of shopping options.  Having been on 2 previous cruises, the excursions tend to all look the same after awhile so we chose to stay at the Hilton Colonial Resort and enjoy a private beach day.  It was a nice property with a food/drink voucher.  We walked about 3-4 blocks after we got out of the port area (it felt like much further than that in flip flops).  The Freedom was in good shape. We enjoyed the 2.0 upgrades of Guys' Burgers and Blue Iquana.  The pool areas were always very crowded and the slides are old and tired compared to the Magic.  If you are a first time cruiser, definitely start out on the Freedom and then work your way up from there.

We crammed 2 adults and 2 teenage children in one balcony cabin. This was our first experience with a balcony and I don't think we could ever go back to an interior cabin again. It was so nice to sit out on the balcony in the morning and drink coffee or late at night and watch the moon reflect off of the ocean. Very peaceful and relaxing.

Ship tip

The Playlist production shows are all incredible with high tech effects. We went to every single show they offered. We personally enjoy doing various trivia games and spending time in the casino more than the crowded outdoor poor/water activities.

We sailed the magic last year and the freedom this year and I want to like your comment 1 million times! The Magic is incredible! I've seen tons of "Freedom is the greatest ship" etc, obviously I'm thinking, they haven't cruised on the bigger and newer ships, they'd be blown away..

I think the trick is to adjust your expectations when you go older and more crowded. I've sailed multiple luxury, premium and contemporary ships, and was on this same Freedom sailing. I expected an older, crowded ship, adjusted my expectations, and had a great time. You get what you pay for.

I agree kind of. We have been on small fantasy class ship moved up to conquest class then dream class. For us going on the conquest then the triumph was still really a good experience as well as going from the magic to the breeze. I also have no desire to go to the Bahamas for the same reasons you said but would love to find another way to get to key west on a cruise ship.

I agree, we sailed the Magic and then did the freedom, we had an aft balcony on freedom and it was a lot smaller than the ocean view we had on the Magic. Luckily we don't spend a lot of time in the room. We loved Key West but Freeport we were not impressed. Nassau we did beach excursion to Balamore island, was amazing. A cruise is what you make it big or small ship. We had a great time and will cruise again!😊
