Review summary

I would gladly cruise on the Carnival Dream again. The Flying Scotsman is a great cruise director.

Embarkation

I would have to say that starting the cruise was the least enjoyable part of the trip. That was not the fault of Carnival ,but of Mother Nature. I had thought that 1 and a 1/2 hours in Dulles was more than enough time to make our connection to New Orleans. It very nearly wasn’t. Because our flight was delayed getting out of Washington by weather (snow) its return to Washington was also delayed. Our hour and a half shrank to a mere 7 minutes to catch our connection to New Orleans. It was made worse by the fact that United movedour departure point to the farthest possible point in the terminal. By the time we got there we (both seniors) felt we had run a marathon. That’s one huge airport. The following day our embarkation was chaotic at best. It looked to us that most people didn’t show up at their assigned times, or too many people were scheduled at the same time.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
The Steakhouse was indeed the culinary highlight for both my wife and I. The meal was excellent, the service, prompt without being intrusive. The free bottle of wine a pleasant surprise. The sea day brunches were a great way of getting to know our fellow passengers. We met people from all over the US. Tennessee, Washington State, Missouri, Arkansas. The food was great and the company better.

Sam's Piano Bar

Ben the piano man, in the bar was both talented and entertaining, His talent at the piano is extraordinary in its range. Everything from the theme for the 60s tv show Green Acres to Pink Floyd. Very enjoyable.

Onboard Activities

Entertainment

The shows in the theatres were entertaining and a good variety of songs and dance. The tribute to Motown was very well done as was the rock show.

Service and Staff

Our waiters and room steward were very efficient as well as personable. They were constantly going above and beyond to provide great service.

Cabin / Stateroom

We were very pleasantly surprised by the deluxe Oceanview room we got. The second washroom complete with tub is a brilliant idea. The tub might not be huge but is certainly a pleasant change from the smallish shower. The bed was very comfortable and the seating was a pleasant option. We will definitely look at Oceanview for our next cruise.

Ports of call

New Orleans, Louisiana

5 out of 5
Before or after your cruise you should definitely plan on spending time in New Orleans. The French Quarter, Canal Street, The ruby Slipper, Bourbon Street, the Garden District, are all worth your time. If one wants to see what Bourbon street was like 20 years ago go to Frenchman Street Just outside the French Quarter. Great food, better music, and fewer kids peeing in the street.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

The shopping was good, once you got past the somewhat annoying and persistent shills on the sidewalk. No one was truly annoying when told firmly ,but politely “no Thank You”. Be careful though of the cab drivers that say they will take you to the “Mall” or the shopping area, or the beach. Our driver got uncomfortably insistent that we should take his tour for $35.00, then $30.00. I had to tell him to pull the bus over when we got to the shopping area and he was visibly angry when 3 couples got off the bus.. He had the nerve to tell us that we didn’t want to use the public beach because “the Jamaicans go there”. Crew from Carnival had said it was every bit as good as the private “pay” beaches. They were right, everyone we met on the public beach was pleasant and we were not bothered at all.

George Town, Grand Cayman

Clean, pleasant, entertaining, great shopping.

Cozumel, Mexico

Did the hard hat walk on the bottom of the Caribbean excursion here. It was a fantastic experience. The water was crystal clear, and warm. The staff were both professional and enthusiastic as well as very conscious of the fact that not everyone was initially comfortable 25 to 30 feet down on the bottom. The safety divers fed fish at one point, truly amazing schools of the most brilliantly coloured fish. A very worthwhile excursion made better by the staff before, during, and after, the underwater time.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Because we were doing a back to back cruise we were simply escorted off the ship, through customs and then right back on board the ship. It was effortless and very well organized.
