Review summary

The cruise was generally relaxing.  We avoided the drunks as much as possible and had to stay away from the pool areas due to the parents who set their tweens loose to torment other adults. Thankfully we had a nice balcony where we could relax in relative peace. Our room was well cared for by our steward, although he was never able to get maintenance to repair or replace our defective television, and the entire ship was clean and well stocked. We had friendly waiters and enjoyed our time in the dining room. Michelle in the spa is fantastic! I highly recommend a visit to the spa to meet her.

My biggest problem with the entire cruise was the commercialism.  Activities on the ship were ridiculously overpriced. For example, $95 per person to view the staff quarters. I don't mind paying someone to take their time to show us around, but seriously?! There are a dozen or more people on the tour at $95 a head. That's outrageous!

The meals are very good in the dining room but the buffet was mediocre. Pizza was horrible from room service but the cheesecake was good. The only drinks included in your cost are unsweetened tea, lemonade, juices (in the morning only), coffee, and water that tastes like pond water. Sure, you can get a package for carbonated soft drinks, but they are stingy with them. You have to go to one of the bars to get one and they will only give you a half of a can at a time. I highly recommend checking out the ship policy regarding carrying on your own drinks and doing so rather than buying the soda card.

The ports of call were interesting and enjoyable, although I have no interest in returning to Montego Bay,  Jamaica. We met some very nice people but the location is sad and dirty. You won't have a minute of peace from someone trying to get you to purchase their trinkets, even on the beach. Grand Cayman and Cozumel were both worth the visit. I would have liked to spend more time at the sea turtle hatchery on Grand Cayman. Definitely worth going to! The tour of the Mayan ruins in Cozumel was well worth the time too.

This was our first cruise but will likely be the last. I really don't enjoy dealing with drunken people enough to repeat this type of vacation. We will find a resort to visit and explore on our own.

Bernie, Guntara, and Branko in the dining room were so nice and personable. Very pleased to know them. Michelle in the spa was a joy to meet and I highly recommend setting aside some time to visit her.

Cabin / Stateroom

TV doesn't work properly and never could get anyone in to fix it or replace it. The screen would randomly fade in and out to a black screen but you could still hear the program.

Ship tip

Bring your own drinks.

Ports of call

New Orleans, Louisiana

I enjoyed walking the French Quarter and visiting Harrah's.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Enjoyed the visit to the Sugar Plantation but the city was a sad, dirty place.

George Town, Grand Cayman

Be sure to visit the sea turtle hatchery and snorkel with the fish and turtles. Take a taxi and go on your own. The Carnival excursion only allowed you to stay until 11:30 and we were only able to see half of the facility. Returned to the ship with 3 hours to spare.

Cozumel, Mexico

Mayan ruins and the tour of the island was nice and informative.

Definitely try Princess. It's my choice of the 2. We have an 8 year old, and when he goes to the kid's activities, there might be 10 total in his age group. Yes, a little pricier but worth it.

MiMiangGramps WHY did you pay $95. for the behind the scenes tour?? You did not have to go. One more example of "A cruise is what you make of it." You can find something you don't like on every cruise line if you look for it. There are people who get drunk on all ships, luxury included. 5-star reviews are the norm for the Dream. She is a fine ship and Carnival is great!!!!

I had this issue as well when I tried carnival. My wife and I enjoy Royal Caribbean and don't plan on ever stepping foot on another carnival ship you should definitely try another cruise line. Don't let the lowest of the low cruise line dictate the rest.

You might consider different destinations also. alaska cruises tend to have fewer children as well as river cruises.

tayoung right now they separate for the loyalty program.

try a luxury cruise, might be less children, and definitely NO drunks

Sometimes it takes more than 1 cruise to realize all there is to offer and figure out how things work. For example, different ships may differ in what they offer, example: Serenity on some ships have a pool others don't. If you are more particular about things it helps to research the ships on their website then look for cruises on the ships you prefer. About commercialism, the extra cost activities/shopping/drinks are a choice not a requirement and most activities are included. There is so much to do/see/eat that is INCLUDED for all ages. I'm a 50 year old grandmother, I don't get drunk and party but I always enjoy our Carnival cruises. I learn a little more each time I go that helps me plan better to make it the perfect vacation.

Kids run loose about everywhere, people can't be bother to parent anymore, you can have a waiter/waitress bring a soft drink, if you are talking about the behind scenes tour, that has limited number so not everyone is paying $95 and that tour is 3 and 45 min long

Skywatchers I didn't know Carnival owned Princess! Thanks for that info. I know this is a long shot but I will ask anyway, do VIFp club members get credit on either cruiseline or do they keep it separate?

You would really hate Disneyland. Commercialism and loads of kids.

what skywatcher said

Please don't sign off on Cruising. Try another line like Princess Cruises. They are owned by Carnival but a step up in elegance and prestige. You'll pay a little more but it'll reduce the number of kids to nearly zero and the average age of the guests is about 50 . . . well past our party years. I GUARANTEE you the difference is night and day. . . Try them. . . please!!! Thanks for commenting.

Don't give up on cruising unto you give Princess a try. It is quite different then those party boats like Carnival.

I know you said you won't cruise again but you might prefer a different cruise line. I've heard that the kids are less likely on some and I'm sure you would run into less people drinking as well. Carnival is a great budget friendly option, which of course is going to bring the families with kids and the younger adults who like to party more.
