Because they want to make sure one person doesn't buy the package and share with others in the cabin. Cheaper to just buy the drinks in most cases.

Simply because it's an industry standard on most mass market cruise lines departing from the USA. Unfortunately some bad apples have ruined it for others by sharing the drinks when it was available for individual instead by cabin purchase.

I agree because I don’t drink either but what can we do? However Princess cruise line did let us buy just for him.

To prevent guest from sharing the package with others guests in the same cabin.

You can get an exception for certain reasons, but you have to call in and speak with someone. I have a medical exception. I know there are other valid options accepted as well.

If it's any consolation, you have to drink at least 6 drinks per day. Plus they charge you for gratuity when you buy the package (extra 150) Also they charge you gratuity every drink you get (18%)So when the cruise ends if you've at least gotten your money's worth you will still have a bill of 160 to pay. Assuming a 7 day cruise that's over 1200 dollars. I don't think most of us drink that much. I still love to cruise though
