Splendid Cruise, slightly let down by weather and striking dock workers on consecutive days. Azamara are great, but We do think though that They don’t give sufficiently more than Celebrity to justify the higher price point. Back to SevenSeas for us for ‘proper’ luxury. 😎
Embarkation
5 out of 5
Completely painless. We arrived early but were looked after in the terminal by Azamara and once open for guests, just walked on - with no pressure for an annoying embarkation photo when we weren’t exactly looking our best having just got off a flight.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
4 out of 5
Food invariably excellent though there was a real focus on pork on this trip, and the only way to get a decent steak (apart from the final night’s surf&turf) was Steak and eggs at breakfast. Disappointing that in order to be able to order a better cut than the standard New York Strip involved a fee for speciality dining ping, which we object to on this, a five-star line.
Windows Cafe
4 out of 5
Don’t be put off by the fact that this is essentially a buffet. There were several themed evenings in there, and the Indian one was absolutely superb,
Onboard Activities
3 out of 5
Being a small older ship there was very little alternatives here, though the gym was very good.
Entertainment
4 out of 5
Entertainment was ok, plenty of effort put in by the ships entertainment team, but the final night Samba Dancers were amazing! The young Mexican pianist in The Den, Maryfayre, was a delight.
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
Universally superb with special mentions to Dwight in the Den, Vadym at the pool bar, Sergii in the main dining room and of course the astonishing cabin stewards Luis and Bam.
Ship Quality
4 out of 5
The ship is of excellent specification, but was, surprisingly, a little tatty in places despite her $48m conversion only last year.
Cabin / Stateroom
4 out of 5
Reasonable size, but again quite possibly the smallest bathroom in Cruise history. We reported the noisy (when at sea) veranda doors which didn’t seal properly, but had no follow up or apparent repair.
Ship tip
Don’t miss hugely talented pianist / singer Maryfayre in The Den
Lovely island. Look out for ‘the face’ outline in the mountains which is uncanny. Our ship-organised ‘panoramic’ tour was both short and disappointing where one of the passengers knew rather more than the local guide. An absolutely gorgeous beach is within walking distance of the port.
A strike in the pier meant we couldn’t dock and diverted to Búzios just north of Rio which was a tender to this quite stunning resort. A little basic here and there though sadly, commercialisation will soon sort that out. The sea was beautiful here.
