Review summary

For anyone who is interested in booking with royal Caribbean, I strongly suggest you read my story first. Especially if traveling with children. On April 2nd, my family and I set sail on the anthem of the seas. My daughter (pictures here) is 15 months old. While on board, my daughter contracted the noro virus and had severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Hours later, her body broke out in this rash. We sought medical attention and were told from Dr. Anna, that she would "be fine". My daughter had been on antibiotics a week prior, and we were assured that this was a reaction to the medication. We learned from our own doctor, once off the ship, that this rash was a direct result of the noro virus. I begged the doctor for a topical hydrocortisone to ease the discomfort, and we were directed to the cruise ship store where we were able to purchase some for an outrageous amount. My daughter had such severe diarrhea, that her entire diaper area was BLEEDING so I begged the doctor for a prescription strength cream (which she told me she had), but wouldn't give me because, "you can't use that on children". If she had any pediatric experience at all, she would know that you can, and it almost instantly relieves a severe diaper rash. I begged for prednisone, or decadron, or a pediatric epi pen and I was denied all of those things. I asked for zofran so my daughter could stop vomiting and was told by the doctor that they don't medicate children. Well guess what?! Hours after being off the ship, my daughter was medicated with the exact things I asked for onboard. The medical staff were inexperienced and couldn't wait to get rid of us. They promised us a follow up phone call to check on my baby, and never did. Anytime I reached out to medical, they only cared about how much money they could charge me for it being "off hours". Mind you, they only worked for two different periods of a couple hours each day, so almost always is "off hours". My daughter was in agony for two days. Her eyes swelled shut, she scratched herself crazy. I gave her Benadryl and Tylenol and Motrin, and it wasn't helping her. The staff would take one look at my daughter and look the other way. No one offered to help, no one even offered to bring us food or drinks since we were stuck in our room caring for my kids. My poor son, who is 4, also got the noro virus and spent 12 hours vomiting without any relief from medical. My husband and I found ourselves changing the sheets, bringing food back from the buffet, just so we could have something to eat. We took shifts sleeping so one of us could stay awake to make sure our daughter was breathing. We were so in fear that she would stop breathing and no one would help us. We were thinking of every scenario of what we were going to do if we looked at her and she wasn't breathing. I cried more in those two days, than I did in my entire life. I've never felt such a fear in my heart. My poor baby was SUFFERING and no one cared to help us. I had to make 3 phone calls to demand to get off the ship as soon  as we docked and they told me we could walk off at 6am with NO assistance with our bags and two very sick kids. I had to beg someone to help us with our bags. The night before, at 11pm, the manager of housekeeping came and took our bags and we walked off the ship at 6:30am only to find out our bags were lost. The port manager was the only person who cared enough to help us. All the staff on the ship couldn't have cared any less. So once we got the medical attention we needed, I missed work unpaid, and we got our lives together, I reached out to royal Caribbean to discuss this. You know that I was offered?! $511, which is half of my kids cruise fare back. Which also happens to be a sale price, not even a full price. I paid in total, with the cruise fare, drink package (that we didn't get to enjoy), and excursions over 5 thousand Dollars. They could only offer me $511 or a $975 voucher towards a future cruise, where they would make even more money from me?! This is a slap in the face from a company that made $1.28B last year. Unacceptable to say the least. I will be sure to never, ever book or recommend anyone to royal Caribbean ever again since this is how they treat their customers. I am disgusted to say the least!

Aside from finding loose pills on the floor, that weren't ours, and a receipt under the bed from January, we found the stateroom adequate for our needs. Lack of cleanliness was unacceptable.

so sorry your children got sick. You have to get travel insurance.

I have to say that while on another RCC cruise I got a bad cold and the doctor wouldn't give an antibiotic. After 5 days of suffering, I knew it was not a cold but still I was refused. He did charge me $300 for the visits though! That was on Explorer of the Seas when it was docked in Bayonne, NJ. I do believe RCC needs to ensure that they have qualified medical doctors and nurses working for them (from the US) so they know best how to care for people in the US! Not third world!

Your cruise ended 23 days ago, and you post this now? I suppose you didn't get the payoff you were hoping for? Sad.. I assume you were not forthcoming on the health form that you had to complete and sign at boarding? Even sadder...

wait. so your 15 daughter was already on antibiotics so obviously she was already sick and you brought her on a boat with 6000 other people and are mad at the cruise line?

It is always distressing when little ones are sick. It is particularly hard when on a 'foreign soil' or when familiar medical care is not available. One thought for the future, (we have travelled worldwide with our kids and grandkids). Talk to your Family Dr ahead of time and take supplies with you which might address common ailments. Norovirus is very common, upset tummies also when traveling. Prescription strength OTC meds and creams are easy to pack, just check with your Dr they are ok for the very small ones.

When we were on the Anthem in January there was an outbreak of Neurovirus. Many sick people include one in our group. That said, I was very angry with the number of rude people on our cruise who refused to stop in the wash station of the Windjammer and those who put their hands in to taste the food before choosing. RC needs to do more - the staff was always cleaning the rails, you could smell antiseptic everywhere. We need to do what we can to help!

Quite selfish to take an ill, possibly contagious child on a cruise with another 3,000 people! And to not buy insurance is just stupidity.

As a parent I would never have brought a child that young let alone one that was just getting over being sick You could've flown back from where ever the ship docked if they were so sick Blaming the ship for you taking children you knew weren't well when you boarded isn't the ship and crews fault it's your own Sounds to me like they are trying to get a free cruise

I am always skeptical of post like this. Parental responsibility trumps everything. Trip insurance would have been appropriate.

I think her symptoms were caused by the medicine more than noro. If it was noro, it's likely that you or someone else would have gotten it too. A woman was taken off our last cruise via helicopter because she was sick with phneumonia the week before. Did she blame the cruise line? No. I hope your kid is better but it doesn't sound like RCCLs fault in the least.

"Ship" happens. Purchase trip cancellation/interruption insurance for trips. Pretty sure you would have received similar treatment from other cruiselines' medical staff. Their staff's number one priority is to make sure it doesn't spread to the other passengers.

I'm seeing what everyone wrote and am surprised you took a child dealing with a problem along without getting insurance rcc is highly respective and I'm sure that they did not deny you anything I'm sorry I hope your little ones are ok but this is not even a place to complain

Years ago my brother in law got sick on a cruise and couldn't get much help, if any from the cruise line doctor so when they ported in St Thomas they went to a clinic and were taken care of. Sorry they doctor on board did not help your babies especially from what you described.

Sarahs58    7 years ago

Didn't you have to fill in the health questionnaire before you boarded to confirm that none of you had suffered from anything contagious during the week before the cruise?

ciannone    7 years ago

I agree with Jarah. ANY trip involving children requires buying the insurance. You took a very small child with a weakened immune system on a cruise with 4500 people and you're surprised about illness?

jarah    7 years ago

I don't have kids. But when I cruise I always ask myself, "who would bring babies on a cruise"? If you're spending $5k on a cruise with babies then you should have been smart enough to purchase vacation insurance and canceled going since your baby was on medication the week before-Your $5k would be back in your pocket now. This dramatic story never would have happened if you were a smarter parent. Don't blame RCCL for your poor choices.

sorry to hear about your daughter but RCCL and their ships are great

Wow even denied an epi pen I can't believe this. I am a pharmacy technician and you had asked for all the right things poor child. My heart goes out to her things could have gotten worse. I'm sure the lord was watching over her. Hope all is well now. I think it's best before going away to think of everything under the sun to bring with us even if we don't use it.

This is absolutely terrible and so unfortunate. I hope your children are ok. I don't think any cruiseline has competent medical staff to deal with serious issues onboard. We really take our lives into our own hands when we set sail on these floating resorts. I wish you all the best.
