Review summary

Our first Royal Caribbean cruise after Norwegian, Carnival and MSC. We were impressed with the ship and staff. The ports are a bit ho-hum but the ship can only port at so many places. We will do it again later this year in Allure’s sister ship.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Very easy process - we drove down from Dallas and pre-booked parking in the North covered lot right by the terminal. We spent more time driving up to the terminal to drop off my wife (who was recovering from ankle surgery) than anything else. There were actually porters coming out to the lot, so I could have kept the luggage with me. I like the new terminal - not that we spent much time there. We boarded very quickly, partly because my wife had handicap boarding. The procedure seems very efficient.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
MDR was good - a different theme each evening. We had My Time dining and booked before boarding and then changed some of our evenings once onboard. Food was good, service was good - we were seated with the same staff almost every evening. We did the buffet for breakfast a couple of days and food and service were good.

Dog House

5 out of 5

I loved the Dog Haus - hot dogs and sausages were good. The everything bun was very tasty.

Rising Tide Bar

5 out of 5

This is a fun bar - it’s a pretty slow ride up and down three decks but it should be experienced. The bartenders were some of the best on the ship.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
There is a lot to do onboard.

Casino Royale

5 out of 5

It’s a decent casino and it has a non-smoking area. I left some money there for next time.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Shows were fun.

Aqua Theater

5 out of 5

The divers were impressive. It’s a fun way to end an evening.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The staff was very good - our room attendant Su was amazing. Waiters and bartenders were friendly and efficient.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
I loved the ship. I was really impressed that a vessel that holds that many people doesn’t seem that large. The elevators were almost always quickly available - and my wife was on a scooter. Getting around was easy. I am now a fan of the Oasis class.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
This is a handicap ocean-view balcony. The balcony ramp did not work properly but it was fixed manually. We had plenty of storage. There was an outlet by one side of the bed that I used for my CPAP and I was provided with distilled water. There was room by the balcony to park my wife’s renter scooter and charge it overnight.

Ship tip

Enjoy yourself - and pace yourself. I don’t think you can do everything thing available on the ship in one cruise.

Ports of call

Galveston, Texas

5 out of 5
Embarkation was easy. Traffic will be busy when trying to get in and out of the port. The North covered lot is very close to the luggage drop off.

Cozumel, Mexico

We just did some shopping and went to Margaritaville for lunch.

Coxen Hole, Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras

We just got off the ship and had lunch at a bar (Monkey Lala) in the port. Good drinks, good food but food took a long while to arrive.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Disembarking was delayed by law enforcement action. I would have liked more information but I’m sure that Royal wasn’t allowed to share. Once the line started moving, disembarking was pretty efficient. Find a porter and let him lead you out.
