Review summary

Really enjoyed the ports of call. The ship was just okay. Ill be going back to Carnival for the next one!

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Arrived at the port via shuttle about 40mins before our 11a check in time. We were able to go thru security and check in within about 10mins. After, everyone arriving early needed to sit in zones to wait for the ship to begin boarding. We got on the ship at about 11:05a. Overall, the process was smooth.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
MDR: We did anytime dining which wasn’t available until 6:45p. The food and service was good. Giovanni’s: Food was okay. Not worth the price compared to the included ‘Italian Night’ in the MDR. Windjammer: So far the best buffet food of any cruise ship I’ve sailed on.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
The main pool area was too crowded for my liking. I also had a hard time finding outside space that offered some quiet.

Entertainment

1 out of 5
By far, the WORST entertainment I’ve ever experienced on a cruise ship or anywhere. I would say a step below a high school musical. Not sure if this is typical for Royal Caribbean ships. Maybe entertainment isn’t a focus area? I also found the Cruise Director Tornado Tanya to be uninteresting and even annoying. Did not enjoy her 10-15 minutes spent before each show explaining the nights and next days activities. The small venue entertainers, like Piano Bar and Lounges were not good for me either.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
I wouldn’t say anyone went above and beyond, but the service was adequate. Everyone was helpful and friendly.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
All areas were clean. The rooms are dated, but that is to be expected. The toilets repeatedly would not flush the toilet paper. Needed to flush multiple times. I didn’t love the ships layout. There wasn’t an area to sit outside at the back of the ship, which is a favorite place for me. I also thought the main pool area was very congested. Also, not enough areas to sit outside but have peace and quiet. This was my second central ‘Promenade’ ship and this is also not a favorite of mine. I appreciate the more traditional atrium areas or the Grand Central area on the Excel-class Carnival ships.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Dated, but okay. The sink drained slow so you couldn’t leave the water on too long. The toilet wouldn’t flush toilet paper. Had to flush multiple times.

Ship tip

Get ready to take the stairs. The elevators are slow.

Ports of call

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

5 out of 5
Enjoyed the port area for souvenir shopping. Really low prices. Did the Exclusive Tour to Chacchoben, really enjoyed the architecture and learning about the ancient culture. Climb the ‘stairs’ to the top of the structure at the end, what is at the top is well worth the climb! Bring bug spray!

Galveston, Texas

No excursion. Some of the areas looked suspect so didn’t venture too far on foot. Stayed at the Harbor House the night before the cruise. Accommodations were adequate.

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
The port is a little dated, but it was okay. We did the Fury Catamaran Sail, Snorkel and Private Beach excursion and had a really great time. The water was so clear and fish were everywhere! Manny and his crew on boat #5 were excellent!

Disembarkation

1 out of 5
Terrible. The pre-work for disembarkation seemed very organized, everyone getting tags and even a tv channel dedicated to the process. Things broke down from there. We were given tag #2 for disembarkation, target time 8:15a. They told us to watch the tv to see when the number was called. There were two groups ahead of us, suites and tag #1. We put the tv on at 7:35a, and it said Suites thru 18 were already called??? When they started calling rooms over the intercom, they called Suites thru #9. From the time we left the stateroom to getting off the ship was an hour. We had to wind thru the casino, the line moving very slow. I definitely expected a more organized, smooth process given all the pre work and communication the night before.
