We love cruising…but this one fell a tad shy of our usual experience on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

Review summary

Brief. We find ways to enjoy every journey we take. This one at times challenged our good nature. The main dining experience was sad. From having our dining time and seating summarily changed with no willingness to abide by our reservation, to the 2 plus hour dinners that the poor frazzled though delightful waiters tried to make as enjoyable as possible to the sad offering of tepid sometimes unappetizing food. Very few wow moments in the main dining room. Our room steward was friendly, efficient, but not thorough- and we found out he was a new employee which accounted for the occasional lapses in service. Just our opinion- but we think part of the reason the overall personal service is not what it used to be is the practice now of compulsory “tips” which is a huge contradiction in terms. A tip is a reward for excellence, when it is expected it is not a tip and therefore negates any extra efforts toward excellence in service in order to ‘earn’ a tip.

Embarkation

Easiest and fastest embarkation ever!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Our waiters were delightful. The food was mediocre. This was NOT typical of the wonderful meals we have enjoyed on Royal.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Mini golf! Fun!

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Some fun performers, did not see the ship singers and dancers.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Our waiters were very nice and eager to please. Some other staff were wonderful to talk with- enjoying their work and the interaction with passengers, many others were at best indifferent, others almost hostile, some definitely not loving their job. So different than when we first began cruising.

Cabin / Stateroom

It was adequate, we don’t spend much time there! The bedding is not comfortable. Hard bed with the uncomfortable separation in the middle.

Ports of call

Boston, Massachusetts

5 out of 5
Very interesting and walker friendly. Historically fascinating. We downloaded an app for the freedom trail. Great!

Portland, Maine

4 out of 5
Very familiar with this port, been there many times so just walked all over and visited familiar places and the fish market.

Bar Harbor, Maine

4 out of 5
Quaint town. Enjoyed the path around the coast and the trip across the bar to the island.

Saint John, New Brunswick

4 out of 5
WOULD have really enjoyed actually seeing the places on our excursion, but the rain washed out most of the views and opportunities to walk and see anything.

Halifax, Nova Scotia Did not visit port

This port was changed. Would have liked to go there again to visit the places we didn’t get to before. Went to Sydney instead, nice town, some historical areas that were very interesting, walker friendly place.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Easy, just like the embarkation.
