Monterey had a heavy rain storm while we were there, so we did not go far.

I highly recommend the Sea Car Tours. Rental office is Walking distance from the port in Portola Hotel. Rent the yellow car for an hour and drive to all the points of interest along the coast.

This port was okay, but had to take a tender in from the ship, so that always adds a bit of extra to the getting on and off the ship. There was a nice fisherman's wharf with shops and restaurants to explore, but the wharf is quite a walking distance from the town and there wasn't much else to do without taking an excursion, which we did not do.
