We got off the ship and hired a tour guide to take us to Antigua. It was a very good tour of the countryside with an active volcano in sight. They are still cleaning up after the volcano erupted in July. We enjoyed seeing the old town of Antigua and have a great time.

We booked Antigua on Your Own through HAL. After a long but interesting and beautiful bus ride through the Guatemalan countryside where we got to see the aftermath of last year's volcano as well as an eruption as we were driving by we transferred to smaller coaches for the ride into Antigua. Here we hired a local guide and were shown around the city, can't say enough good things about Antigua, this might have been the highlight of the 21 day cruise. If you have the opportunity don't miss it. From chocolate to jade and churches to city square there is something for everyone and the architecture is incredible. Again I would liked to have had more time here, but certainly felt that we got a good sample and will have to return again. The port has a very nice green space with lots of vendors and tourist information. If you don't have a tour booked you can find one here or just spend some time shopping from the locals.

The port area is OK. Not much there. We did Colonial Antiqua, Countryside and lunch. Overall the tour was good as Antiqua is a nice place to visit. Unfortunately we were inundated by local vendors trying to sale there stuff as soon as we stepped off the bus and it continued non stop throughout the tour of Antiqua. We visited the Jade factory and store which was interesting. Our lunch at a five star hotel was a disorganized buffet. Charged $3 for a can of Pepsi which was supposed to be included with the lunch, etc. Food was OK and the tour of the hotel and museum was OK. There is a long bus ride going and coming to Antiqua. We were in a 18 person mini van which was very uncomfortable with poor AC. The drive was a bit scary at times with passing on curves and narrow roads. .
