Unless you are doing an excursion, get off ho through the duty free store on the pier and get back on, because other than that Progesso ain't much to write home about.

The port itself was fine. The city area gave the appearance of being impoverished. We did take an excursion to visit the Mayan ruins, which was educational.

We made the mistake of assuming we would not need an excursion at this port. BOOK AN EXCURSION. We took a cab into the city of Merida for 2 hours of shopping. There was 4 travelers and the driver in a very small car and he spoke zero English. It cost us $80 ($20 each) for this cab to come and go from port. We only stayed in the city for 34 minutes. It was nice to see the sights but not truly worth the money. Like I said before this was our fault for not booking an excursion though. The market at the port had good deals.

If you don't have any excursions planned, don't even get off. The walk to the ten shops they have is longer than the shopping area.
