We rented a car and drove the Hana Highway. It is a rugged drive with over 600 curves and 59 bridges - 46 which are one way. The views are spectacular and there are waterfalls every couple of miles. A stop at Halfway to Hana for lunch and a drive on it to Hana and a stop at a beach for a swim made it a fun day.

Our Molokini crater excursion was canceled due to high winds so we hung out on the beach near the ship for the morning (meh) and then took the Haleakala sunset excursion which was awesome. I understand the sunrise is much more crowded, so I am glad we did it this way. On day 2 we took the best of Maui excursion to Iao Valley state park (amazing), Maui Tropical Plantation (Interesting) and the aquarium (fun, with a surprisingly good lunch). Our bus driver Henry for that one made it a really great excursion as he was so funny.

This was one of the worst ports. The island of Maui is supposed to be beautiful, yet NWC chose to dock in an industrial area. So when you look out to sea, you see shipping containers, and you have to go to too much trouble to do anything at this port. I don't want to sit on a bus for several hours each way from an excursion destination. This is a shame because there is a lot too do and see here and we feel like we missed it.

Seeing the Banning Tree that is over an acre in size was neat. At first you do not thing it is all one tree but as you starting looking you see that it is only one hugh tree. The drive up to the Volcanoe was well worth the trip and no we did not do the sun rise trip. Seeing all the great beaches in the area and the various gardens. We rented a car again and we covered a lot more ground at a much lower price than the cruise prices. Overnight parking for the car was free and only 300 yards from the ship security gate that was very nice. The car rental places have pick up and deliver back at the docks.

Iao Valley & Maui Tropical Plantation- very educational. We learned alot about the island, its culture and commerce. OGG635A Whale Watching Cruise- The whale watching was awesome. Saw so many whales, moms, escorts and calves. There was lots of jumping, rolling, tail slapping and tail rolling. A mom and calf came right to our boat and sort of waved to us. The biologist lowered a hydra phone and we could hear the males speak. Amazing!!

Went to Haleakala National Park. There was a flash flood warning so we couldn't do the Pipiwai Trail hike we wanted to do, and heard from a lot of people that the traffic on this island is horrendous, especially the road to Hana. Takes up the whole day.
