Not a whole lot of shopping to do here, and since that is the main reason we cruise, it was a little disappointing. We were able to find a few places that had T-Shirts though.

There was no cheap way to get from the dock to local food/shopping. We ended up taking a bus to Walmart and walking around the mall there. Not what we had hoped for. We wanted to experience local shopping and restaurants.

Excellent-real Hawaiian. Toured the Mauna Loa factory; Akaka Falls, Rainforest Zoo and a fresh produce market via Hoppa On, Hoppa Off bus tours..wonderful!

The crater tour was OK but too long and since no volcanic activity could be seen somewhat disappointing. The rainbow falls was also somewhat disappointing because of reduced water flow and thus less mist to display the colorful falls. The lava tube was interesting but be sure to wear proper shoes and a hat to avoid the condensation drips. The view of the crater from the lunch time resturant was the best (and the buffet was good). Macadamia nuts are better purchased at some of the discount stores instead of the factory. NCL excursions are too costly - comparable tours are offered on shore by several competitors at much better priicing.

Hilo is not very touristy from what I can tell. We took this opportunity to visit Volcanoes national park which was very interesting. We opted for the tour that did NOT include food and we were glad we did. The food is served in an old lodge that hasn't been remodeled since the 1940's and the food is terrible there. Also, don't buy macadamia nuts at the Mauna Loa factory, they're much cheaper at one of the thousand ABC stores you'll see walking around anywhere in Hawaii.

Hilo was fun. Rented a car & saw the sights. Also, there was a free festival in the downtown area. But, it doesn't feel very clean. So, I didn't eat off the ship.
