Riga, Latvia overview

Riga is home to a university, the Latvian Academy of Sciences, and to numerous other educational and cultural institutions. The old section, or Hansa town, is circled by a park-lined moat and includes the ancient castle of the Livonian Knights, the 13th century Lutheran cathedral, and the Parliament building. This area, with its narrow, cobbled streets lined with gabled dwellings and warehouses, has retained much of its medieval character.

Be aware that Royal Caribbean docks 30 minutes away from town and charges $14 to go into town on shuttle busses that we had to wait 30 minutes to arrive. Otherwise Old Town was interesting with curving small streets and lots to see and eat.

Riga’s old town is a short stroll from where the ship docked. We walked to the right, under the overpass and along the waterway until we reached the first light to cross the street. Walking past the blue church we turned right and walked into the plaza with the old Cathedral. We toured the Cathedral and kept walking down the street that led us to the Cathedral Plaza. The next big plaza is further to the right and has an open market. Wandered around and found the tower that was struck by canon balls. Around is a great inexpensive outdoor cafe. Further down the street is a linen outlet.
