Russia was amazing, 2 days wasn’t enough time to really appreciate its culture and history but was good enough. I did 2 days of awesome sightseeing.

We did a 2-day tour with an evening folk show add-on through a private tour company, which is really the way to go. We spent half what we would have with Norwegian, the tour size was much smaller (14 people), and we got to see more than would have been possible with Norwegian (including the newish Faberge Museum). You can't combine the 2-day tour with the evening folk show tour through Norwegian. Customs is nerve-wracking here, nothing can be done to change that, just get there as early as possible, have all of your tour information, and stay patient.

We had scheduled tours with Alla Tours. This was definitely the highlight of the trip. The tour guide (Anna) was great, so knowledgeable and very personable. We did a 2-day private tour (choosing exactly what we wanted to see - as an example, spending more time at the Hermitage than the other tours provided) and the night tour (we had Russian dinner).

We did an excursion with Shorex. We saw the Peterhof Palace (beautiful fountains), the Hermitage, and the Church of Spilled Blood. These 3 stops certainly had some beautiful aspects. However, we have never been to Russia before and were saddened to see the stark conditions of the Soviet era apartment buildings. Since we are "farm people" and used to wide open spaces, we couldn't imagine living in such concentrated quarters. Our excursion guide (Anastasia) was very knowledgeable but unfortunately we had about 4 persons on the tour (out of 11 total) that kept wandering off and taking 1000's of pictures. Their lack of common courtesy resulted in the rest of the group having to wait for them constantly. Not sure how one could have avoided this.

Enjoyed seeing the sites, getting on and off was a challenge from the city not the ship. We did enjoy the tours though. Worth the work. Hermitage nice to see not sure if it was worth the crowds though.

The architecture is stunning but the museums were very packed. A lot of shoving going on in the queues due to limited time to see expecially the hermitage

Recommend excursion from a company that limits to 20 people or so. We used Shore Excursions - and they were great.

The city has remarkable sights spanning several hundred years of history and holds one of the world's greatest art collections. We booked an independent guide for two days, which we found to be an excellent way to see the main attractions in a short time.
