We landed in Gatwick and overnighted at the Courtyard by Marriot. Nice hotel, but skip the breakfast, over priced, poor selection and poor quality. Get breakfast at the airport. Also there is no town nearby so it was an expensive cab right to Crawly for dinner. We took the train to Southampton from Gatwick the next day. Super easy and low cost. We bought the tickets online for 13 pounds each way, each, on an off peak return fare. Train ride is fast just under 2 hours and very comfortable in roomy, air conditioned cars. Just a 7 pound taxi ride from the train station to the pier, by far the easiest and least expensive way from either airport. Embarkation was done in 25 minutes and we were on our way. Very good service, efficient and cordial. Overall very well done.

Free shuttle into town. It lets you off a block from a big shopping mall with nice stores. Town itself is interesting. One could spend a long, enjoyable time just walking around from where the shuttles stops.

Stayed overnight in Southampton before embarking and was pleasantly surprised at how nice, and historic, the place actually is. There's a great selection of bars/gastro-pubs a few streets away from where the ship docks, in particular The White Star - a must if you want a great selection of wines and incredible food at a very reasonable price.

We always stay over the night before. Lovely bars, restaurants and plenty of hotels to choose from. Great parking at the dock and the staff there are amazingly helpful.
