We arrived in Athens a couple nights in advance, so we had some time to sightsee. It's a bustling city with plenty of good restaurants, and of course fabulous ancient sites like the Parthenon (visit the nearby Parthenon Museum first).

We booked on shore excursion with cruise, most of the time were on the bus, there were two stops, one stop was at Acropolis of Athens, they give us 40mins, but 4/5 of the time was bring us to the gift shop nearby. another stop was Olympic Marathon Stadium, only 10 mins, funny things was, they extended one hour to bring us to a coffee shop without telling us, most of the people stay on the bus wait for few people to go to the shop.

The ship needs to inform passengers that you need to take a tour to get to Athens. You can take a taxi to go see places in Athens but you are taking a chance that you will get back in time to get on the ship. We didn't take a tour and ended up staying in Piraeus which didn't have much to offer.
