We booked our own private tour here and had the best day with them away from the crowds and saw some beautiful sights.

Don't spend any time in Messina. Head directly to Taormina, Castelmola, and Naxos. We took a tour through Sicily Life. Avoid the ship's tours b/c you will feel like a herd of cattle and will be overcharged for the experience. We booked all of our tours independently and it was worth the time spent researching them.

Did not do an excursion, but probably should have gone to Taormina. Messina has nothing to do there. Not good shopping or restaurants, and taxi drivers don't speak English, and take advantage of you.

WE did the excursion, "Savoca & Forza D'agro: The Godfather Tour". The sights were just beautiful.

We took the bus to Taormina and returned with the train. Taormina was fabulous! The bus takes you up to old city of Taormina were you have some great views of the beach down and the city is full of narrow streets with shops and plenty of gelato. You can swim down at the beach if you like (there is a Funicular) which can take you down (or up). I recommend you use the train because the bus took us there in 2 hours (too much traffic and many stops) whereas the train took us there in an hour. From the train station, you have to take a bus up to the old city.

Took the NCL " Godfather" tour to 2 villages used for dilming the movies. Gorgeous views, but the steep hairpin turns to get up are a little harrowing but part of the fun too!
