Florence and time on your Own was the option we bought. The guide on bus was a infomercial to the most expensive jewelry and leather store in Florence. The guide for Floence was probably okay. Way too many people. We left the tour within the first 5 minutes. We had been to Florence before and had the map and knew where to go to get to the leather market and buy stuff as well as the jewelry that the tourist don't go. They keep the tourist in one area which I get - way too many people. I guess if you need a ride in to Florence you could use the bus and be there when they leave at 3:30. I think you would be better off to just take a taxi in and arrange everything before you leave on your cruise.

Took the ship’s tour Pisa and Florence on your own. We started with a trip to Pisa and were given one hour to explore and be back. The buses are not allowed to drive up to the site so we had to walk en mass to the site. An hour was plenty of time as the site is very concise. Be advised if you want to climb the tower you are subject to military search. We then took a trip to Florence, again we parked a good distance away and walked to the square. We were given 3 hours on our own. The area is easy to navigate and I was able to make it to everything I wanted to see and had time for shopping and gelato. When it was time to meet up I went to the place where we were supposed to meet only to be told by another member of the group that our tour leader had changed the meet up spot to down the street. This caused confusion and some upset people. As we were trying to leave the area two other groups tried to exit with us causing some to get temporarily lost. We thankfully made it back to the bus right before it started to rain. An accident on the highway made us late to port and they waited for us and the other groups.

We did the ships excursion to Florence and Pisa as we wanted to see both places but was dubious about doing it on our own due to distance from ship and to both places. The excursion we booked allowed free time on our own once we reached them. We stopped at Pisa first, fantastic place. We went inside the Tower, cost €18 each which I thought was a little steep considering you only get half an hour inside. They are timed and only allow so many in on each time slot so if you want to do it and are limited on time like we were (only had just over and hour here) then buy your tickets soon as you get there. Word of warning, there are nearly 300 steps to climb and you can’t really stop off to catch your breath. It is a killer on the legs and lungs and I’m pretty fit. Views from the top are fantastic though so was well worth it. Shame we had little time here as it’s lovely little place, we didn’t have time to go inside the cathedral. Next stop was Florence which I’d heard so many people say was beautiful so was looking forward to it. However, I’m sorry to all the Florence lovers out there I didn’t think it was beautiful. It’s a lovely place and I enjoyed the few hours we had there but I wouldn’t class it as beautiful. I had built up an imagine of a picturesque place from people descriptions so maybe that’s why I felt a little let down. Also maybe it was because we didn’t have long there to explore and see much. We did take in the Cathedral and a few other points of interest. I thought it was quite an expensive place to visit. Massive on their leather there - plenty of leather handbags & coats for sale. Also, gold, if you love your gold this is the place for you, so many jewellers. All in all was a good day. Coach back to ship took about an hour and half. Wish we had more time in Pisa and less in Florence but they can’t please everyone and time is limited when you go further afield from the ship.

Livorno is a port town. There is nothing to see there. Again, you MUST take a shore excursion. Our shore excursion San Gimignano and San Donato farm was the highlight of our trip. YOU MUST do this shore excursion, but whatever you do ... DO NOT stay in Livorno. There is NOTHING THERE!!

Used the shuttle to get to the train station...... Train ticket machines take ATM cards from the US and have English translations.....easy to use......validated your train tickets in Italy before you board. We went to lucca (we have been there before) and went shopping.
