It would have been helpful to know how close we were to car rental facilities once we took the shuttle bus out of the port. The shuttle was free but we had to wait a while and you had to get your own luggage on board the shuttle (below the bus). There were a fair number of people who were going on to other things once we left the ship (not the airport) and needed to use the shuttle to get out of the port. Taxis were not available until you were out of the docking area (shuttle). There were buses to the airport and other destinations that appeared to be well organized and smooth. Easy to pick up the shuttle although the line and getting a spot for luggage was a little hectic and not organized. Kind of every man for himself. Then the area outside the port (where the shuttle took us) was spacious and had plenty of cabs. We had rented a car from Europcar and were pleasantly surprised to find the office adjacent to the shuttle drop off. The ship had not been able to provide us with those small details.

We were pleasantly surprised with this port. We took a shuttle into the city and shopped around a bit. Then we took a bus into Tarquinia, and we saw some of the Etruscan pottery and relics. Lovely in December as the entire town lit up for Christmas at night.

Second really long day on the trot but, again, extremely worthwhile. Today's excursion was 'Rome in a Day'. Visited The Vatican, The People's Square (for The Trevvi Fountain and The Spanish Steps) and The Colliseum. In each place we had time on our own rather than a guided tour. Timing was fine in all but The Colliseum where we had too much time as we did not actually go inside The Colliseum (due to entry times being at special times and not fitting in with our pick up time). We were lucky with the weather. If it had been raining we would have been stuck!

I wouldn't recommend doing a full day city tour here as there wasn't enough time to see places it being August there were a lot of queues. This didn't bother me as I had been to Rome before but my friend who hadn't been was a bit cheesed off. We had delicious gelato in the square where the trevi fountain is.

We got on the cruise from Rome, and actually did two days of excursions on our own prior to getting onto the ship. Loved Rome, saw the Colloseum, Forum and Palatine Hill; took a full day hop-on/hop-off bus tour and received group tours of both Pantheon and Vatican City and that was great.

I had high expectations for Rome and I felt a little disappointed. Mostly this was due to crowds and the pace at which the tour went through the ancient sites. It seemed like from Trevi Fountain to the Colosseum, it was a matter of find a spot to sneak in, take your pictures and get out of the way. There wasn't that chance to just take in the moment. Still I saw so much of my punch list. But you can't cover it in a day.

This port is damn near impossible to get to on foot. Save yourself the trouble and just pay the money for the ships transfer in or for a taxi. No one knows what’s going on, not even port authority. They told us the wrong place to wait for the shuttle bus, it ended up being about another mile away from where they said it was. The embarkation area is in a little pop-up tent - but it did go very quickly. Once we finally arrived to the area where you embark, we were on the ship within 15 minutes. It’s an industrial port, so not to see, but the walk up to port from the train station in Civitavecchia is beautiful.
