Did this on our own as well. There will be buses standing by right outside the pier for 20 Euros (each) roundtrip. Do it! The Shore excursion goes for $199 each and covers the same ground. We hooked up with a free tour once at St. Peter's that was very good!

No excursion as sunday, so we felt it not suitable, some excellent shops & we walked along the front & found a wonderful cafe, pizzeria for a drink & snack.

Same as Livorno. You only have a few options here. Either you book an excursion which is very expensive or you take a shuttle, then taxi to the train station then a taxi or a bus to the destination. If you take a taxi, ask the price or negotiate before embarking. A lot of dishonest taxi drivers.

We booked a Royal Caribbean excursion to go see the Vatican City, as the port was industrial and far from anything interesting. The Vatican was crowded as it was around the Easter week, but it's probably crowded all year. Just remember not to buy from bigger shops, you will find the same quality cheaper on the street.
