MILES from Rome. HAL charged $70 for a shuttle into Rome which seemed to be the going rate. Booked a tour of Rome with Rome Cabs. At 450 Euros it is not inexpensive BUT we only had a day in Rome and it was well worth the money that we spent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Despite millions (I kid you not) tourists and hot summer heat, we had a lovely time in The Big Lasagna (a city layered on a city layered on a city).

Don't waste $120 buying a transfer to Rome with the cruise line, and don't get on the "shuttle" to town, either. Just walk down through the port, and you'll be at the train station in 20 minutes. A ticket to Rome is under 5EUR, and the train to St. Peter's is 45 minutes.

Go to Rome before the cruise. Go to Bagnoregio and Orvieto from Civiavecchia!

Our second visit to Rome. This time we managed to see the beautiful Trevi Fountain (it was closed for maintenance on our previous visit). Our guide was exceptional, making sure we were well looked after. So much to see, it will need several visits

In Civitavecchia we visited the ancient Roman baths located near the port (approx. 10 minutes by taxi). It was interesting and enjoyable.

The port is far from Rome so don't plan to see too much because you will be on a bus to Rome for quite some time as well as back to the ship from Rome. I suggest not doing any excursions that say "on your own" as there is so much to see and it is easy to get lost and not always easy to find your way back to the tour bus that drops you off in Rome. If planning to visit the Vatican, buy your tickets in advance and keep in mind, it may be all you have time for on this cruise. If planning to visit the Colosseum, buy tickets in advance (unless they're part of your excursion already) if possible, although this is difficult because they need to be purchased for a specific time and you don't really know what time you will arrive due to traffic etc. PS the fountain at the base of the Spanish Steps is NOT the Trevi Fountain.

You can get to Rome by train and it is cheaper than the excursions. You can find other skip the line tours to see the main attractions once you get there,

Disembark as early as possible. We took a minivan from the port which worked out to EUR40 pp. Great Deal as the port is an hour drive from Rome. The Minivan is licensed to drive in the narrow roads of Rome so you actually get dropped next to the attraction saving a lot of time. Do not take Shore excursions ... super expensive

I've spoken with people on here about how to get to Rome so we did the train. Once we got to Rome we went to the trevi fountain, and it wasn't busy at all!! Then we walked around and then got some pizza!! After that we took the big bus hop on hop off until our 1:30 audio guide tour of the Colosseum. It was a beautiful the Colosseum. The entire day was again, everything I could have imagined it would be with great weather again!! THIS IS WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF !
