We had a lot of fun here. We visited Cuatro Sombras coffee shop and Punto de Vista rooftop restaurant. Great coffee, great food, great drinks! This is a good place to skip the excursion and just explore. Do some research about places to visit and have fun!

Easy to walk the 2 forts from the ship in 3-4 hours with some additional time for downtown shops.

The walk along the waterfront to the fort is lit up for Christmas - very pretty.

This port was great with six ships lined up. We did a San Juan Old and New tour but it did not deliver. We were disappointed to be dropped in Old San Juan to be told to explore. Nothing was open and after 10 minutes of photos we were done in that section. However did get to have a lovely breakfast with my wife just off the Christopher Columbus statue park. First truly amazing coffee on the entire USA Trip. In defense though they were not expecting ships due to high seas and boy were they big. But still it was the driver of the bus that let us down that day (Bus 10 - Carlos). Gave very little information on the areas going to and just dropped to explore. Not what we were expecting and could have walked to the areas ourselves in Old San Juan from the ship Would not recommend the tour. Loved the Rum Bar on the port area and the shopping again yielded a beautiful ring for my loving wife.

San Juan has a great history. They are doing better but some of the people are still recovering from the devastating hurricanes the last 2 years. The people we heard from are not bitter about it...it is just taking much longer than expectd to recover from such large category hurricanes. We did a tour around the city and Felix our tour guide was Excellent. We learned a lot about their history and culture. Be sure to get some Don Q Rum while you are there!
