We loved San Juan, although it was really hot and humid that day and it made for a slightly more strenuous trip. El Morro was great to visit and learn about some of the island's history, and we met up with a friend of our one daughter who lives there. She and her sister took us to El Morro by back roads that let us see some nice views that we would have missed if we'd taken a taxi or the trolley, and they also took us to a great place for lunch, Tropical Taste, that served some really good authentic Puerto Rican food for lunch, as well as fantastic mojitos! They were able to keep us clear of the most touristy parts of town, which I think made for a nicer overall visit.

I did two excursions through Airbnb experiences, Best Kept Secrets of Old San Juan Walking Tour and Rain Forest and Cultural Dance Tour. Both were excellent.

BEAUTIFUL city. We just self-toured old San Juan on foot with limited time in port. We were impressed by all the architecture and the friendliness of the people. This is a place we will come back to for a longer visit.

San Juan is both a great port of call and a wonderful embarkation port. If you’re leaving from San Juan, I recommend arriving a few days early to enjoy the island. Plenty of good hotels in Old San Juan where you can enjoy the city life, culture, history, and cuisine before boarding. I stayed at Hotel Milano in August, 2018. It wasn’t luxurious, but it was clean and reasonably priced. And in the heart of the city. Walked everywhere! And just a few blocks from the docks. Try Mofongo at a local place while there for a great local treat!

You DO NOT need to buy an excursion! Everything is walking distance! We walked from the cruise port to the Morro the view was amazing! Do bring water with you and a damp/cooling towel it is very hot! After we left the Morro we walked to where the shops are with the cobble stone ground it is so beautiful. Walking along that street we ate mofongo and original Pina coladas from a restaurant named Barrachina the food was sooo good and the piña colada amazing! Also walking along that same street right near the restaurant Barrachina the color umbrellas! They’re so beautiful to look at and take great pictures! On your way down that same street you will find the biggest Pandora store in the Caribbean! That Pandora sells 4-5 Charms that you can only buy in Puerto Rico! There are also a lot of souvenir shops! You can’t get lost walking in these streets. Before we got off the ship we went to a seminar to learn more about what to do in Puerto Rico and one of the best way they taught us to get around from the port is... “walk 3 blocks left and then 3 blocks up” and that should take you to the Main Street where you’ll find everything!

We have been to San Juan more than once and love it! This time we did the window cave hike. It was awesome! We got some amazing photos - got to meet some great locals and learn more about the wildlife in San Juan. Sad we didn't get time to visit Old San Juan as we love it but not disappointed in our hike at all!

No excursion, just walked about town for a bit. Find a place for some good mofongo - look it up. Punto de Vista on the top of a hotel in Old San Juan... worth it for sure, especially if you can get there for happy hour.
