Review summary

This was our very first cruise ever, and it was a fantastic experience for everyone. We all agree that it was one of the best vacations we've ever had, and we're looking forward to the next one we can take. For my wife and me, that won't be too long as we're booked on Anthem for a trip to Bermuda this fall!

Embarkation

4 out of 5
We made a point of arriving for embarkation around 10:30 / 10:45, and it was still a pretty decent crowd at Terminal 29. As first-timers we had no priority line to take advantage of, but the port staff kept things moving surprisingly quickly for the size of crowd we had. We cleared and boarded within 45 minutes, which I'd consider good overall for the crowd we had.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Dining overall was really, really good. As it was our first cruise, we only tried Sabor one day for lunch and skipped the specialty restaurants for dinner. Service everywhere was great and I think each of only had one meal in the entire trip where we felt it wasn't prepared well or where we just didn't care for the item ordered. The one indulgence I made that I can't review separately in this section was the Chef's Table. This was an absolutely amazing meal and worth every penny of what I'd paid. That meal back at home would have easily run me over $150 or even $200, between the wines paired with each course and the gourmet food served each step of the way, but I only had to pay $90! And the company I had during the meal was also fantastic, making a great experience even better. I did have the Deluxe Beverage package, and I made good use of it. Margarita at almost every sail-away and/or sunset, glasses of wine before and with dinner, cappuccinos right after breakfast, and that fantastic fresh-squeezed orange juice! I'm not a big OJ drinker, but the fresh-squeezed was some of the best I've ever had!

Main Dining Rooms (Galileo, Isaac & Leonardo)

5 out of 5

Main dining room was great. We had the late traditional dining slot at 8 PM and it actually worked great for us. Left us plenty of time on port days to get back to the ship at all-aboard time and take our time to enjoy sail-away, clean up, and get changed. All meals were fantastic, and I only had one time where I thought the preparation was lacking (a fish entree that came out dry and a bit tough). Great opportunity to try new dishes, and we never left feeling like the meal was a disappointment. Our waiter Jigger and assistant waiter Danny were both super-attentive and quickly learned our likes and dislikes. Jigger even made a point of finding some extra escargots for my one daughter and me on a night when it wasn't on the menu, after we'd had it every day prior! We also used the MDR for breakfast just about every day, and some of us ate there for lunch on sea days as well. Here also, food was really good and we never had a complaint with the preparation or the service.

Sabor Mexican Restaurant

4 out of 5

This was the only specialty dining we tried, and it was for a late lunch when they were about to close. We weren't terribly hungry, so all we ordered were a couple of the small plates: bacon-wrapped chicken-stuffed jalapeños, and the beef empanadas. The empanadas were only so-so, but the other small plate was fantastic! We were fighting over who would get the last bites from that one! And of course, we had the guacamole. I have to be honest, my daughter has made fresh guac many a time at home, I honestly feel that what she makes was better than what we had in our visit. Not that the guac on board was *bad*, mind you, it just wasn't the "holy cow this is the best guac I've ever tasted" experience that I've heard is common when dining at Sabor. Might have just been seasoned more lightly than we do it at home, might have been that we got it on our last sea day and the avocados were getting old, or could have been because we arrived late and got some of the last available before the dinner prep started. Service overall was good, although our waiter forgot the margarita I'd ordered until he came by with the check. But he also gave us a 20% discount on our entire order since all we'd gotten were the small plates and no entrees or desserts, which I thought was a great gesture and not at all required. Overall good experience, and I wouldn't object to doing it again.

Vintages

5 out of 5

Really good wine selection here, and a better set of reds on offer than I was expecting. I had some of the standard Zinfandels that I often drink at home, and they also had some absolutely fantastic Tuscans and Sangioveses that I've since found and bought after getting home. "La Volte" in particular is stellar! Since I had the drink package, I only had to pay the few dollars in overage per glass for those more expensive options, which made trying these out and discovering some new favorites really easy.

Windjammer Marketplace

3 out of 5

Windjammer was most-visited by the rest of my family. I personally didn't care for it that much, but I'm not a very big fan of buffets in general. We all agreed that a fair number of the desserts were kind of bland and not really showing off the flavor we'd expect (e.g., the "chocolate bar" cake had almost no chocolate flavor to speak of, and the lemon cupcakes often served with lunch were similarly lacking any real lemon flavor or even particular sweetness). Averaging our opinions on this area to 3 stars.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5

Casino Royale

3 out of 5

Casino was OK, disappointing that it only had one craps table and that it only offered single odds unless you wagered $25 or more a throw. Smoky as expected, after only 30 minutes in there I'd have to change my clothes when I went back to my cabin. Slots are ridiculously tight, don't waste your money on them. Just play whatever table games you're comfortable with and enjoy, your money will last longer and you'll have more fun.

Logo Souvenir Shop

4 out of 5

Took advantage of this on the sale days and got some t-shirts, a hoodie, a Christmas ornament, and a couple of other things. Happy with all of it, service was fine and the crowds on the sale days seemed to be better than the horror stories I've read; no pushing or shoving, people being patient while the line moved along, etc.

Day Spa and Fitness Center

5 out of 5

My wife got a Swedish massage and added the hot stones to it for only $20. Said it was fantastic and she was really glad she'd booked it. She also used the gym regularly and never had a problem finding a treadmill or elliptical to work on. The staff there are also really attentive to guests accidentally leaving things behind. My wife left our old iPad there one time by mistake, and the staff quickly saw it and locked it in the desk by the entrance. When I went up to ask for it back, they asked me to unlock it there to show that I was really the owner. Definitely exceeded my expectations in that regard!

Rock Climbing Wall

4 out of 5

My daughter did this one and really liked it, said it was a lot harder than it looks. Came close to reaching the bell each time, but didn't quite make it before she had to give up. Staff was good with making sure everyone had signed the waivers beforehand, and also making sure everyone was securely in their harnesses and that lines were managed decently.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Opening night was a mixed bag; liked the singers and dancers and the live band, but the comedian was really on and off; yes, we're on a cruise ship and there's plenty to eat, do you *really* have to bring out the tired old trope of everyone's going to get fat / already is? The main event on Night 2 was pretty good, standard Broadway / show tunes revue. I would have liked for some more modern numbers instead of the really old stuff from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Cabaret, and A Chorus Line, but the performers were all good and we enjoyed it. Saw the ventriloquist on Night 4, he was funnier than I expected him to be. The "not a plant" audience member brought up was kind of clearly a plant by the end of it, but it was still a good and entertaining show. Last thing we saw was the ice show, "FreedomIce.com". Started slow but by the third or fourth number we were really enjoying it. Amazing that they can perform on such a small rink and still do the full set of ice skating techniques.

Children's Programs

4 out of 5
Our two teens skipped the "meet and greet" on night one, and my younger one tried a couple of the other teen-specific events and said each time that no one showed up. I think most of the teens just formed groups on that first night and then met up spontaneously for various things on board during sea days and at night, so if you have kids that age make sure they *do not* skip that night 1 meet-up! Giving this four stars because there was certainly plenty for the teens to do, and the staff were good according to my one daughter for the times she went to specific activities.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
As noted in the section on dining, our waiter and assistant waiter were both great. Our cabin attendant Miriam was also wonderful, greeting us by name any time we bumped into her and keeping our two connecting cabins in great shape throughout the trip.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
We thought everything looked great, and I don't personally get reviews here saying the ship looks "dated" or run down. I certainly didn't feel like I was in a time warp back to the 70s or 80s, and I happen to like that "classic" look of the MDR quite a lot. I regularly saw staff keeping things clean and shiny, and there wasn't anywhere on the ship that I thought looked in need of updating due to wear and tear. I even saw someone painting the ship's exterior as we disembarked for one of our port days, just doing some touch up on a bit of the hull where some fresh white paint was needed.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We had two connecting cabins; one for my wife and I, the other for our two teen girls. Couldn't have asked for a better first-time cabin experience. We found the balcony spacious and comfortable to sit on with a drink or our phones, and my wife in particular loved to just relax out there and watch the ocean go by. The view each morning as we approach our port of the day was always great as well. We're definitely spoiled for balcony rooms now! As far as the size of the room, it was adequate for our needs since we weren't cramming the four of us into a single room. The amount of storage for our clothes was a bit tight, and we definitely didn't overpack. (almost the opposite, in fact!) Just would have appreciated a few more (or slightly larger) drawers or shelves to hold our stuff that couldn't be hung up. The beds were comfortable and we didn't have any trouble sleeping at night. Shower was definitely on the small side, especially for me with my 6-foot 3-inch frame. I did like that the towels had the little loops on them to hang them on the door, so you didn't have to reach awkwardly around the shower to where the towel shelves were after finishing up.

Ship tip

Learn how to get to the helipad! I loved going there for sail-aways and sunsets, and the one night we had low winds and clear skies it was amazing to go out there and see all the stars on display. Just be aware that if you go to the helipad at night, you MUST NOT use your phone's camera flash or flashlight; doing that will get a security staffer down there faster than you can blink, and they will close off the helipad for the rest of the night.

Ports of call

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida

4 out of 5
We spent three days here before our cruise as it saved us money on the flight. Not sure I'd do it again, as it's an expensive city to stay in and what we saved on the flight was more than spent on the hotel and dining in the area. But the public trolley system is great for getting to the beaches and Galleria Mall, and the beaches there were nice; clean, not crowded, and depending on which part of the beach you stopped at there were plenty of places to grab lunch or a drink.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

3 out of 5
Hated the port village / market, hounded every third step by someone offering a taxi ride or tour or free knick-knack if you visited their shop. We did the dolphin push/pull/swim excursion, which was fun but expensive to get the photo package; no way I wasn't getting the package, doing this was a bucket-list item for my wife and I wanted those photos to remember it years from now.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

5 out of 5
This was by far our favorite port. If you come here and want a day of snorkeling and beach time, check out Soualiga Destinations (a.k.a. "Captain Bob's", http://soualigadestinations.com). They run a great daily tour and our boat captain Brett and first-mate Laura were fantastic / really friendly. Awesome excursion, amazing views of the water and island as you go from point to point.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

5 out of 5
We loved San Juan, although it was really hot and humid that day and it made for a slightly more strenuous trip. El Morro was great to visit and learn about some of the island's history, and we met up with a friend of our one daughter who lives there. She and her sister took us to El Morro by back roads that let us see some nice views that we would have missed if we'd taken a taxi or the trolley, and they also took us to a great place for lunch, Tropical Taste, that served some really good authentic Puerto Rican food for lunch, as well as fantastic mojitos! They were able to keep us clear of the most touristy parts of town, which I think made for a nicer overall visit.

Labadee (Cruise Line Private Island)

5 out of 5
This was tied for second with Puerto Rico. Just a great beach day, especially since we had booked an over the water cabana for a really great rate the moment they became available. Great service from our attendant Fritz, and having access to the "golf carts" to get around the beaches, buffets, and attractions was great. Food was so-so for me, but again I'm not as big a fan of buffets as many. Standard barbecue fare, nothing awful but not stand-out either. Loved the Labadoozies! Wife and girls did the zip line and loved it, said it wasn't nearly as scary at the top of the mountain as they had thought it would be. I did the alpine coaster (all day pass) and had a blast; started at 11, ended at 12, and got four rides in that time. My wife and girls also had the all-day pass but could only get in two rides in the afternoon, as the lines were much longer then. Definitely do that first / early if you get the all-day pass, far better value for your money that way!

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Disembarkation was so-so. We were in the next-to-last group to disembark, and everything moved really slowly. It took about an hour total to get off the ship, find our luggage, and get out to where we could be picked up by a Lyft to go to our hotel for the night. Porter was really helpful here, and very worth the money I gave for hauling our bags out.
