We did the Monkeyland excursion and had a wonderful experience. I would not recommend venturing out on your own as the towns were quite dirty and crowded with scooters and crazy drivers.

Get off the boat and take a taxi to the beach. Absolutely beautiful crystal clear water. We paid the taxi driver extra to take us on a tour around the town. Had an amazing time!

Unless you book an excursion to Los Altos de Chavon ( recommended), or two or the other ones available, there Is nothing near by to do nearby. There is a supermarket called JUMBO within walking distance from downtown, You can get local coffee, diapers, personal items, etc. You need a a taxicab to get to the downtown area, where you will encounter lots of vendors. There is also a pharmacy. The taxi cab is $15 each way, two couples can split the cost. Hopefully another port will open in the near future in addition to the one in Puerto Plata better now as AMBER COVE, in north side. We really like Amber Cove.

Next time I will book an excursion. Decided to walk the port which was not much & paid to go downtown that was a NIGHTMARE. I paid $10.00 roundtrip & I was there 10 minutes if that & came back to ship. Carnival has this as an excursion for $40. I think you guys need to remove this excursion. It only aggravated me as the locals harass the tourist not fun at all.
