Not much to do right off the ship, so I definitely recommend an excursion here. We took a taxi with friends to the Dreams Resort, which was $65 each all-inclusive and well worth it. The food was fantastic, the drinks were cold, and there was an option of a lovely, uncrowded pool or the beach. It was a wonderful, relaxing day.

Here we visited Dreams La Romana resort on a day pass, which had an open bar, lots of good food, a nice pool and beautiful beach. Taxi for 8 round trip was $100, which can be negotiated just outside the port. There are some shops around the port, but quite low key and nothing that appealing. I would strongly suggest leaving this port, as the port is very new and there is almost nothing to do at the actual port other than visit little overpriced shops.

Greatly improved since our last visit. There is now what I would call an upscale straw market. Some nice hand crafted items and some “real” shops. A small band was greeting passengers. Highly recommended a shore tour if you want more of the island.

Go to the Dreams resort in La Romana. This was NOT an excursion booked through Carnival we found it on our own. A short taxi ride (15 min) from the port. Hotel has visitor pass for the day all food and drinks included!

A group of us took a boat excursion for Sanoa Island. All inclusive with lunch and drinks. As many people have complained ahead of me, yes it is not a wealthy country and locals do have to sell to feed their family but it wasn't any more aggressive than any other port.

Grab a $5/person (each way) taxi to a local beach resort...rent a chair and drink rum from a fresh coconut!

Better trip combinations is "Altos de Chavon" and Beach instead of going to La Romana town.

Take the 16.95 train tour for 45 minutes, you won't be disappointed! It is a carnival based attraction with a guide, and charged to you SS card.
