I can't even begin to describe how utterly gorgeous it is. I honestly wasnt expecting much. But as I opened my curtains as the tour began my jaw dropped. Even saw a bear!
Very cool! Note that most people will stand in front waiting for pictures. If you go to the back you can sit in chairs with blankets and enjoy the ride up. We got breakfast from the buffet and took out back. The captain will swing the boat around when leaving and you will have an unobstructed private view!
Any opportunity to see the glaciers from the water is something not to be missed during your cruise. Most lines have a naturalist on board for this part of the trip. You will learn how massive and far reaching the ice fields are. You will hear the resounding "rifle shot" of the glacier calving, the roar of the ice crashing to the water and, sometimes, ride the swell created by the massive chunk of ice.
Due to the time difference and the fact we were going to be there so early I actually planned on sleeping through it...... that would have been a BIG mistake Captain made an announcement and I got up and checked it out. Once I opened our curtains my mouth dropped. One of the highlights of the trip! Gorgeous!!!!
This was one of the most beautiful places that we have ever seen. I’ve always Been told that some of God’s most amazing Work was created in Alaska after going through here I believe it
Did the fjord and glacier excursion. An absolute must! Saw humpback whales, black bear, many bird species, seals, grey whale, aquamarine waters, deep blue glaciers.
Went back in August. When we got on board we saw advertisements for an excursion for Tracy Arm Fjord. We did not see this while booking online through the cruise so we asked the excursion desk about it. Turns out it is not always offered due to conditions of the area. We decided to book and I would highly recommend it. I thought it was well worth it. The journey was absolutely beautiful looking at the towering mountains. We were able to get up close and personal to two glaciers. Much closer than what the ship could get to. The boat can weave around the ice blocks and back out of tiny areas allowing us to get much closer. It was breathtaking. It also rained the day before so we were lucky to see hundreds of cascades and the boat got very close to a large waterfall (and it sprinkled while on the boat). The boat ride itself was enjoyable to me. I personally will stand outside in the freezing wind and mist just so that I can have a clear view the scenery. Exercise those sea legs if you are going to stand the whole time!! Bought 3 cups of hot coco throughout to warm me up. If you dont like the cold you can stay inside. It is warm and has seats. If you have the option, you love boat rides, and getting close to the most beautiful landscape then don't miss out on this opportunity.
Get up early to see the whole trip! It's absolutely breathtaking. We had breakfast at a window seat and went outside to find a spot. We tried several locations but found out, go high and go to the back of the ship for the best views. There was beauty at every turn and I promise you, pictures do NOT do this justice.
The sights here are breathtaking. It is VERY cold so you should bring many layers for this day. Our ship saw whales while sailing out of the fjord ( we went in 15 minutes before the whales showed up😢). The sawyer glacier is magnificent it is receding fast so get here while you can. This was a great addition to our cruise and I think that the incredibly early wake up is totally worth it.
