Why Are Several Cruise Ships Pulling Out of Jamaica?

Here's a link to an article explaining why cruise ships are eliminating this port of call. It is not like it is a surprise to us, though.

I think Jamacia Is beautiful. The vendors there are very compeative. When we were there last time, we went on a island tour. Our tour guide kept us on a tight schedule. We stopped at a small shopping center, maybe 5 shops. When our 20 minutes was up our guide took a head count and a newly wed couple was not on the bus. So our guide went to look for them, and found them in the jewelry store/ watch shop. She told them we were ready to go, and they all got on the bus. And on our way we went. The next thing we knew wewere on our way back to the shop and the police were there. The couple had to sign a paper saying they were just looking and not intending to buy or our guide would have been fined for interrupting a sell. That was a little unnerving. But everything else was great.

I would hope so, but there are still so many resorts that bring in thousands of visitors who are also harassed by the locals.my son and his wife were followed into a shop by a local. The local pointed to a couple of things and my son was pleasant to him. As they left, the local demanded money for being their personal shopper. My son claimed they were only out for a walk and browsing so he had no cash on him.

Once the big cruise ships pull out of Jamaica, I am sure that the government will crack down on the abuses. If they don't, they will loss the revenue that the cruise industry brings to their country.

We thought Falmouth port was nice too... but only within the gated port area... as soon as we left the gates it was a different story. Just didn't feel safe. We were surprised so many people stayed on the ship in Falmouth... it was like a sea day! (Disney Fantasy).

That's a shame. We visited Falmouth just a couple of years ago and the port was so nice. It looked new. Just beautiful. We had no problems with anyone. It is, however, nice that the industry is taking notice and being proactive.

Good thing you were safe. When cruising to Nassau a warning about safety was on our daily FunTimes, but we felt safe wandering on our own to the Queens Stairs. Belizealso has a very high crime rate, but we took a Carnival cruise in that port.

I'm not denying that some may have had problems there, but I and my family never have.

Other than the pushy sales people at the markets (not uncommon in any tourist area) and one gentleman that offered to sell me some of the finest "tobacco" grown on the island (not uncommon in my hometown) I always found Jamaica to be a fun stop. It also allows my wife to stock up on allspice.

Sounds like all the reports were true. I visited Jamaica and luckily had no problem.

Maybe Nassau will take notice and clean up a bit also.

It is good when the cruise industry actually listens to it's customers!
