I actually did this once at a white elephant gift exchange. At first everyone treated it as a “clunker” gift. By the end of the day the recipient used many because her children’s toys needed new batteries and some others from the party were calling her because they needed batteries (and knew she had them). So while it’s funny, it’s also practical.
